People cheat all the time... but they are also caught all the time. In this case, 'cheating' can get a blog the exposure that it never had before. Is that a bad thing? I don't think so.

If you 'cheat' and your blog sucks, it's not going to help you. If you 'cheat' and your blog is fantastic... it will expose it to more people, who will be happy they found it through your 'cheating' ways!

Technorati shouldn't care. In the end, the good blogs will always rise to the top.

Ok Pete, we just saved yet another puppy at the very last minute! Wow, that was close.

You know what to do now. :-)

What's interesting is that we got into the Technorati Top 50 favorited last September or so and have been thankfully holding our ground. While it doesn't bring much traffic (a few hits a day maybe), it's definitely good street cred and a nice list to be in.

Oh, and I'll second Maki's sentiment above.

It is a shame clamming for votes as a kind of cheating strategy to up-ranking in Technorati. This is a misbelieve campaign... Social network Ok, but I think we should stop distorting the search/ranking results everywere.

Funny, I could swear I just heard Darren Rowse saying the same thing.

It's true, of course, but I don't really see the harm in the favorite exchanges. If Technorati doesn't like it, they'll stop it with either words or code.

It's certainly a shift in gears to automate it. But the cheaters are at it every where, Digg, Stumble, link backs, Digital Point Forum is full of 'trades'.

Well, I added it. Thing is, I don't use that feature at all. I agree, like you say, it's mainly another way to get people adding stickers - pardon me, widgets - to their blog that may drive traffic back to Technorati.

In the end, the only rankings I follow are those where my face shows up in the top #10. Since the answer to that is ZERO, I'll probably create a rakning of people who meet these qualifications: born in Spain, living in California, married to an Austronesian, have two daughters, play guitar, run at least three different websites and drink a lot of coffe.

Anyway, Mashable is #24 now. Let's see what this social experiment does to that number :-)
