I waited one week to get an invite and in my view it is worth waiting. Even though I am using fastest connection and instant messenger to get updates from my contacts until gmail introduced online archiving of our conversation it was really a problem when I am shutting between different clients in our office or my personal computers. Twitter solved the problem to some extent and now Pownce is expanding on the same success formula adding few more features. So if some people feel unpleasant about invitation only registration let them feel more because these days people dont stay long in any service except in mail and messengers. Let the company choose its own policy for registration. I got my invite through www.inviteshare.com by a unknown person who is generous enough to share one of his 6 invites.

I was a sceptic too, but having tested Pownce I'd have to say it's really well build. It's easy to use and the interaction has been well thought out. The only downside to me is the lack of a mobile version, and if it comes it'd better not be iPhone-only like Digg did.

@Yoda: AIR is a new technology in the same way flash once was. It WILL become a standard in the next year or so. Pownce is a great platform to deploy this technology on, as it has a tech-savvy crowd consisting of primarily early adopters and such is the first step in general acceptation of the technology.

It's because he uses his site, which is supposed to be community driven to force junk down our throats. Pounce does the same thing AIM/GTalk/ICQ does, only costs $$$ if you want to do it for more than 10 megs. Plus you have to get a RUNTIME THAT NO ONE HAS!!! WTF is AIR? It may be pretty, but who cares, this technology was created like 10 years, they just threw pastel colors on it and used a ton of javascript....which, if anyone hasn't checked lately, isn't the best thing in the way of security. Stop being wow'd by pretty colors and rounded edges..ask yourself, why on earth do i need this? before installing/using a web 2.0 app

Digg commentors are assholes -- that's all. If you think they're being harsh now, just imagine if Kevin Rose were a black woman (or look at any other Digg story that portrays women or minorities positively).

And, I'd hardly call him a "celebrity" - it doesn't count if it's in Silicon Valley and nowhere else. Nobody knows - or cares - who he is.

Ever since the HD-DVD debacle digg commenter's tone has noticeably changed. The best way I can describe it is a 'take no prisoners' approach. digg users right now are a rather unwieldy and angry crowd, and Kevin Rose's launch of Pownce, is just another easy target. There is a powerful catalyst going on in the digg community, one that in my opinion will lead to its own destruction.

i can't believe i've done it... i was apparently the first one to say the site has absolutely no substance and it's pointless and not to mention useless...

i'm receiving emails in bunches asking me what i think of other sites or even their own site... i have no blog of my own, so i think most other sites are safe for as long as i don't write bad comments on most popular blogs like this...

i can't believe i've killed a site! (well it will be dead soon)

Holy crap, yes. Digg commenters, in the aggregate, are whiny, inarticulate, and smugly confident in their own ignorance. The only thing more annoying than reading Digg commenters (and watching them shout down any dissenters) are the even dumber comments I read on YouTube.

I love the idea of commenting on the comments and bumping them up and down, but the feature is a lot more enjoyable when the site has a somewhat intelligent and respectful commentariat. That's nowhere to be found on Digg.

I'm guessing the observation is based on the comment system, aka the haven of unintelligence. Ive rarely read quality feedback on any site outside of a few of hundreds on digg posts.

People love to hate initially, I disagree although this post was speculation.

Besides SERGEY, LARRY, GATES, he is one of the few Geek Entrepreneurs to become a celebrity - and without really trying to become one.

And he is probably the only one to become an almost instant celebrity - while with the others it took several years and aggressive self promotion.

It is interesting how the internet public will react so strongly to just a few figures but show little personal interest in others with similar creative achievements: eg. YouTube, MySpace, Yahoo, Facebook, Twitter, Slashdot, Delicious, Amazon, eBay, etc..

It will be interesting ten years from now to see how Digg develops and what new career paths he takes.

I think you have pretty much got it covered there. Pownce might be late to the party but it looks amazing. Invite only means it doesn't get too big too quick. And I think it's a classic case of "build 'em up, knock 'em down" with regards to Rose.

We'll see. I'm off to try and beg an invite. Again!
