Mashable - The Social Media Guide: 2008/07/24/time-for-facebook-to-sell/

  • webcoach · 1 year ago
"Right now, it’s cool for high school and college kids to log on to Facebook..."

Boy, I thought Mashable, of all places, would understand that Facebook has a huge adult market who use it for business networking as well as friend networking. You are right that kids will decline over time, but adults will make up the difference. I guarantee it.

"huge adult market who use it for business networking"

What are you basing this statement on? Got numbers?

I agree with this post. Facebook has also done a different version of what Myspace did to annoy its users by allowing apps. Myspace allowed users to alter their profiles and put all kinds of glitter and gold everywhere and it just became annoying. Then came the spam. Well, now the Facebook platform has become more of a nuisance than bands were on Nyspace. Facebook should sell, unless they plan to be google for people info ( big brother ).

    Friendster->Myspace->Facebook->Who's next?
  • Tony T · 1 year ago
I agree, selling now is the best play. Myspace may have sold too early but the valuation for Facebook is way too high.
  • Cody · 1 year ago
I agree Facebook should find someone to sell to. An IPO is not a winning long-term plan.

I don't see, however, how you can call it "King". Sure, it outpaces MySpace internationally. But I can tell you definitively international traffic is worth A LOT less than domestic (US) traffic, and MySpace is still laughably ahead of Facebook.

Just because MySpace is a dirty word and your audience prefers Facebook doesn't mean Facebook lords over MySpace or is even more valuable.

I don't think Facebook would put itself in the auction market until they can find a buyer with more than 1 BILLION cash... After all, Yahoo didn't want to sell itself at 33 times more or so, and most people I presume use Yahoo services less nowadays compared to spending their time on Google and Facebook. (i.e. "ya who?")

BTW, while Facebook is highly popular in USA and some other countries, it's still quite a platform for the "elites" in some countries - say Malaysia at less than 3% penetration of Internet users. So, they's definitely a huge room to grow for Facebook in terms of traditional market before they can become one of International Kings like Google, Yahoo, MSN/Live and Wikipedia (or reach the popularity of once ICQ (now AOL's) and Friendster or those Kings in certain countries like QQ, Mixi, Orkut (now Google's), Bebo (now AOL's) etc.

Facebook is a trendy site, just like GeoCities, Friendster, MySpace they will go the way of each of these sites and be overtaken by some unforeseen entitiy.

It may just be the single greatest waste of time ever created.

Zuckerberg is nothing special. He stole the idea, the platform and has shown no real vision that would make me think this wonder kid is really a wonder.

Anyone care to tell me what Mark Zuckerberg has done that is so special? He isnt even rich yet he is showered graces and exposes as if he were a titan.
  • Heather · 1 year ago
and its all about getting rich, right? Give him some credit for having the passion and integrity to build a huge company not just for a quick pay out.

With all of this talk of 'Who's next?'... who is next? What is the direction of the social networking market? The only real way i see it going is the combination of live virtual feed, youtube, and more applications than you could imagine and facebook could easily accomplish this. There are smaller sites out there like humanbook.com that are promising these different features within the year. But because facebook and myspace take up the majority of the market there isn't a need for a "who's next?".

When did trolls become writers on Mashable? ;-)

    I'm talking about this quote:
"Do we even think about LiveJournal anymore? I didn’t think so."

5.3 million monthly uniques is still a decent number of eyeballs to have for LiveJournal:
    http://www.quantcast.com/livejournal.com

And LJ did sell itself at the right time it seems.
  • Joshua · 1 year ago
When facebook succeeds with Connect, they will stick for a while, because other popular websites are built on top of Facebooks platform.
  • Adam Pieniazek · 1 year ago
Well facebook has a huge advantage over myspace in that half of myspace traffic is spam (70% of my stats are made up) so it doesn't really matter that myspace gets more visitors than facebook because myspace visitors are less valuable than facebook visitors.

What's up with comparing facebook to livejournal though? LJ was never even close to as big as facebook is now. Tons of people understand the word facebook and it's truly become a brand and a necessity for young adults.

Still, I agree with this post, facebook should sell soon. Ad revenue will go down eventually as more and more users start to ignore the ads.

"Half of myspace traffic is spam"
Its know where near that. And in the last half year I have not got one spam things. Myspace fixed the spam problems months ago.
  • Ian · 1 year ago
This is crazy. Facebook is going for an IPO. If they wanted to sell, they would have done it a long time ago. And to sell for $500 million is ridiculous considering they have $493 in VC funding.
  • Jimmy Chicken · 1 year ago
Also agree. Facebook is currently at its peak but I already sense friends and colleagues growing a bit bored with it. The time is now.
  • Matt · 1 year ago
Who the hell could even afford to buy Facebook now?
  • Lionheart · 1 year ago
Facebook has an adult market also, and reading other numbers I can tell it`s more loyal than the young one.
  • VizionQuest · 1 year ago
I have to agree as well. First there was Friendster, then MySpace came along and grabbed our attention and now Facebook is the trendy thing to use. Something more trendy will come along and people will move to it instead of using Facebook. Facebook is becoming more like MySpace in that it gets uglier every day. The constant annoying requests to add stupid, useless spam-like apps don't help either.
  • Travis · 1 year ago
Facebook has always been ugly. And yea I stop using facebook after the got apps. People talk about myspace having spam well facebook apps are spam.

The migration will occur at some point. Friendster and Bebo to MySpace to Facebook to ???. It is inevitable, but could possibly be delayed, if Facebook gets back to work, makes good business deals, gets innovative, and maybe even plays nice with Google. The thing that Facebook has got going for me is the intense privacy hold the user has over their data. I can literally choose who sees what on my profile. I can't say the same for MySpace, which is why I've ditched that. But Facebook's big in the game, no doubt. They keep innovating, they can stay in the game longer. If not, then it's time to opt out and sell as soon as signs of something bigger and better start to show.

    Google will buy facebook!

they have all the money to do so.. wow.. i love these dynamics
  • Terence · 1 year ago
What's Facebook? Seriously, I have never gone for these type of sites as they soon get abused by internet marketers for making money. Everyone is so impatient on the internet and are ready to jump on the next bandwagon that comes along.

And whoever buys it will be buying last years model at tomorrows price.
  • Flat Panel Televisions · 1 year ago
I'd say sell man. The market is too nimble right now. Sell NOW!
