What gets a person the job is not what social media venues they know how to navigate but it is HOW TO INTERVIEW.

Keep in mind that hiring decisions are made based on people wanting to do business with people. Social media helps with finding and connecting but will never get you a job without having to open your mouth and communicating.

Besides that, the principles are excellent aren't they?

Re: 7 Secrets to Getting Your Next Job Using Social Media

I'm sure that the techniques described here have some value but I would be very careful about ensuring that those who have no business knowing that you're looking for a job don't find this out (such as a current employer). With social media, it's all to easy to find out who said what to who and when it was said. If you have a very public profile with a lot of specific information about yourself, you reduce the ability to be able to tweak your CV to suit a given situation and, let's face it, one version of the truth in your CV is not going to be suitable for every job you go for. In these economic times, you have to be willing to take jobs that might be a little left of center from your core profession but in order to get those jobs, omissions, additions and rearrangements often need to be made to your CV. Your story won't hold water if recruiter X sees that you told a different version of the truth to potential employer Y the week before.

And that brings me to another important point. Don't make it easy for recruiters to harvest your information. These vultures constantly post fake adverts on job sites to harvest CVs and then annoy the crap out of employers with "I've got the perfect candidate for you" just to make a quick buck so don't offer the info to them on a platter. And again, don't let recruiters gather info on you and build up a history of your career. They store your personal data for years - yes, years! This is another impediment to your flexible, tweakable history and skill set.

I'm not saying avoid all of the above but just remember that your anonymity also has great value and once it's gone, it's gone.

Re: 7 Secrets to Getting Your Next Job Using Social Media

Great Mashable article: "getting your next job using social media"

Re: 7 Secrets to Getting Your Next Job Using Social Media

Great information. In today's job search, social networking is becoming the name of the game job seekers manage their careers by managing their on-line presence enhancing visibility. One thing to remember - individual networks are tools, not strategies. Being pro-active and using social media to create brand awareness, generate new contacts, and market yourself speaks well to the benefits of Marketing 2.0. Emphasizes some great points to keep in mind. Although Twitter is HOT, there are many many hiring managers who have never heard of it and aren't using it. It's still very new.. Thanks for the tips. I've heard mixed ideas about the video resume. And then it may cause employers to be visually biased. I don't know, just my opinion. But aside from that I've had great success finding work home through this site which lists hundreds of jobs. It may be worth checking out if people are searching for real work home jobs.
http://www.tlcareerkit.com

Re: 7 Secrets to Getting Your Next Job Using Social Media

I completely agree this article! I actually came across a small company through a friend of mine that is helping people with such resume' webcasts and I forwarded to one of my buddies who was recently laid off. Go to http://webcastcity.com/ for some examples but I just thought I would share....got a lot of friends and family in the same boat.

Re: 7 Secrets to Getting Your Next Job Using Social Media

Hi: I just finished transcribing all the interviews for The Social Media Bible, www.TheSocialMediaBible.com. The other 90% should be concentrated on the following seven social media secrets...

Ya gotta reserve a percentage for FACE-TO-FACE networking. Attending job fairs is the only face-to-face method you list, but you have to literally get off that butt that sits in front of the computer for hours and get out there and meet warm bodies if you want to get a job.

Kathy Hansen
QuintCareer.com
author of A Foot in the Door: Networking Your Way into the Hidden Job Market

Re: 7 Secrets to Getting Your Next Job Using Social Media

One odd problem in using youtube is that, by default, all of these will be viewable. If I see the same person has custom video resumes for 12 positions in a 2 month period, that will tell me some additional info on the person, which might not be positive. Keeping them private with passwords might help some - not quite sure how well that would go over.
