    zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

    drag and drop what?

certainly a step in the right direction but forcing kids to "express themselves" within one of three boxes ain't that exciting.

The Beta version is only for premium users, but once it rolls out it will be for all users. Also, a newer and better version of Xanga layouts is in the making, called the "Xanga Themes Directory". There are many benefits with this new version. First, it is very customizable, and one doesn't need know html to adjust the overall layout. Second, modules such as "chatboard" and "friends" can now be added to the page with ease (the ability to add these modules at all is new). In my opinion the beauty of this new layout is that it is completely customizable and it doesn't take a web designer to figure it out.

I wouldn't worry about the Xanga layouts ecosystem... although they're not actively promoting it, the new themes system has a pure-CSS 'advanced mode', so the lay0utz d00dz will still be able to make themes and host the code externally. Worst case is that they'll need to improve their CSS chops, but that's a good thing.
