Alternately, you could install Boxee. In fact, I'm watching the Colbert Report via Hulu on my Apple TV right now. Just don't tell Apple:

wow bet apple will kill this pronto

I don't think apple can kill it. Somewhat like the iPhone hackery, they can update to break the bindings that Boxee uses but all the Boxee dev's need to do is rewrite the bindings.

In addition to Hulu and comedy central Boxee gives you the ability to directly stream .avi or whatever format you have.

@Adam: Leopard 10.5.5. What sort of error messages are you getting? Have you tried manually converting a file using QuickTime? It occurs to me that this might require QuickTime Pro, something I may have taken for granted in writing this since I've owned it for years.

Just one question. How long does the process take to run?

I've converted video for ATV with a variety of tools but QT is soooo unbelievably slow that I've always considered it unusable and stuck with either Handbrake or Visualhub.

Does this routine require Quicktime Pro? I do not have the Pro version and am unable to "save as" or compress anything.

Yes, you will need quicktime pro to re-convert.
