The real value of Google Checkout is not in the monetary transfer during checkout - Google will probably take a small fee in the long run but it won't make its buck there. The real value is the data of knowing what people buy and how they get to that purchase decision. Imagine being able to track a user from search to video to purchases...that information is invaluable when targeting advertisements. That's the play here.

Pete, love your articles, I use both Paypal and Google Checkout. Checkout is good for the sellers with low fees, I have been using since they launched so far no problems. They also allow person to person transaction, we can send an invoice directly to the buyer. It is not simple, but I am sure they will make it easy. Also, Ebay is trying to monopolize Paypal, I think it is illegal to restrict what payment method, the Seller should use, maybe somebody will sue Ebay for it. If Ebay allows Checkout, there will be a massive switch.

Google Checkout also does not support recurring payments/subscriptions... yet.

Google Checkout also has a promotion where they give you $10 off your first transaction with a participating merchant. I keep forgetting about it. I tried once but Buy.com kept saying that I had to choose an "eligible" product.
I do think Google Checkout is aiming to be something slightly different than Paypal. Not many large online merchants use Paypal, but Google's been making headway in that market by lowering the transaction costs. If they could get Amazon or Walmart on board, they'd really have something.
