This was definitely on the cards, Pete but I didn't expect it so soon. I am wondering who is really going to loose market share with this - my guess is AOL might be hit the most followed by Yahoo and MSN. The UI doesn't looks like they a call functionality - is that a good news for the multitude of IM-call apps?

I think in the short term this is going to hurt AIM, MSN and Yahoo messenger serivces. However, I do think AOL is positioned nicely with the news that it is introducing the new open AIM strategy.

This is a screenshot of an IM MySpace released a year ago, and it has since been abandoned. So is the activation page you link to. Do your research!

MySpace tried to partner with GTV and it didnt work out. They have no new downloadable IM.

I think any IM or email related service would make sense. Especially if it turns out that this MySpace Messenger idea isn't ever going to make it out the door (as people have been telling me).

i remember trying it out last year, and i tryed to get my friends to use it but with no success. if they rebuild it and make the new version log you in when you log into myspace, and do that whole gtalk gmail thing then ppl will prob use it more. but there going to have to do some serious advertising, and get some exlusive features or somthing. possably making it so that if you are on webcam on the MSM(MySpaceMessanger) then it replaces you're profile image with the live webcam feed. much like what i did with stickam and replaced my myspace profile image. it's weird that people finnially dug this when it's been out for a while. and i dont understand why it's not in beta anymore. i wonder if it's still on my computer. anyhow, like you said this is not new, and personly i think the main ppl that use IM anymore are middle school kids and younger, and creepy old men/woman. the teens and twenty users are using SMS, Phone, and actually get out. personly i think myspace should make a WebCam Instant Messaging client. and aim it towards it being safe, because you can see the other person. and such. heh... i could keep going, but i'll stop for you're sake.

GTV Solutions in NY built the messenger in the screeen shot. Just look at the screen names. The product mgr is Ross Cohen and he won't say a word about the messenger or even Myspace. I haven't heard back from the CEO but on Digg it says they launching it next week.

Yes, I was told by the product manager that the new product (MySpaceIM) *is* the same one mentioned here. Hard to believe, I know. Of course, it depends how you define "same one".

Judging by the buddy list screenshot, it would be based on Sonork, because both Ken Mayer and Ross Cohen are from GTV (who've 'taken over' Sonork a couple of years ago and then proceeded to rape the best EIM on the market to pursue their social networking ideas). IIANM, Miguel Balsevich, the genius behind Sonork, is also on that buddy list.

I like MySpace a lot, but I really don't like the IM client. Instead I use the eBuddy client at www.ebuddy.com. It's very easy to use, everywhere available and you can even use different chats (like MSN, AOL, Yahoo, AIM, MySpace etc). Highly recommended!
