We are also a company that has built this while working our day jobs so with no funding we are building and adding features as fast as we can.
Did Odeo and Podcast Alley have thousands of listings on their launch day? I don't know -- I wasn't involved at that time... but this seemed a fairly inane statement. They just launched!
It would seem to me that you would give a BETA site a bit of leniency in your post. Let's wait and see what happens.
I think the most important facet of Blubrry is the opportunity for listeners and podcasters to directly interact. I can't really do that at Podcast Alley -- and the Odeo model is so clunky it is difficult to remember which link takes me to which feature.
As such they're not looking to pull in an OPML feed and call it a day. What would be the point of that? iTunes already rules as the king of directories.
Our Motto is simple:
"Podcasters do the Work, Podcasters get Paid"
We have a long way to go, and by no means do we want 25,000 podcast on the site. That was not the goal. Podcasters that want to help the site grow, can join and must agree to the simple terms for listing. Best thing of all no lock in.
I do recognize effort you and your team put in building this, but look, at the end you're in the same game as other sites/directories that do it with funding and it's their everyday (not weekend) business.
Sayign "we have a business model" is fine, but how does it help listeners, especially those with nonIT background (there will be more and more of them). It's them who generate your traffic at the end of the day.
Listeners who come to this website will look for contents, which is easy to use, rich with contents, etc.
Personally, blubrry.com confuses me a bit. Community? What do you mean by that? How is it implemented? As a listener I see limited podcasts, and i don't see how I can interact with anything. ok, i can leave a comment. i also see a "login in" link often which takes me to login page over and over, even if i've logged on before.
Actaully adding a friend, or even subscription does not work for me somehow.. maybe firewall at office messes sth up, not sure, anyway i don't have that kind of problems with other pcast sites.
Presentation of some pages also needs to be fixed ( I saw some strange lines, and overlapping texts - clearly a bug)
If you acknowledge you're still working on this website, you should make it very clear somewhere on the first page. Otherwise listeners will get bad first impression and will not come back.
hope that helps, good luck, Adam
As they say they have made the site without funding from megacorporations.
Sure they could import tons of podcasts but how much better is organic growth where people insert them themselves. This is a better measure of popularity.
If you have the budget to employ slave labourers to do bulk imports then of course your site is going to be released as a fully canned product.
Additionally - search engines don't take to kindly to masses of pages suddenly appearing in their index.
"When your answering 500 messages..."
You mean "you're"... :-) Anyway, I think the purpose of the review was towards listeners and reflective of the site as it is right now. Einstein couldn't add 2 and 2 at age 2, so don't sweat it or worry about the critics. If you build it, they will come. It may take time, I admit, but hang in there!
positive vibes guys...positive.
