Mashable - The Social Media Guide: 2008/10/06/snl-censorship/

  • anon · 1 year ago
so you are pro-regulation for the deconsolidation of big business? That's the obvious conclusion.
  • Mark "Rizzn" Hopkins · 1 year ago
In general, I'm in favor of free market dynamics. I haven't put much thought into this particular spin here, because this crosses over into an arena that concerns more than just NBC/CBS/Fox/ABC. To truly avoid this situation in the future, we'd also hafta enforce deregulation on Google, which crosses into some questionable territory.

If it wasn't for Google's unflinching obedience to DMCA requests, we'd still be able to watch this skit regardless of what NBC decided regarding it's un-publishing.

In terms of that, a simple trust-busting operation wouldn't be the be-all end-all, but would still be accompanied by all the problems that could bring to the table.

you must have not gotten the memo.
  • Jasoncscs · 1 year ago
Howlee Crap! That is BIG. I saw the skit live and it was hilarious. Timely as well since I had just begun to think that the writers on SNL were being biased toward the left and merciless in their parody of Palin. I was just starting to think that maybe SNL was too heavy handed and had fallen into the trap of "Liberal Media" when they broke out that skit and skewered the lefties too. Yippee! I thought, REAL comedy which leaves no stone unturned and brooks no sacred cows has risen to its true purpose. Unfortunately, this news that the left (and the wealthy left at that) cannot allow itself to made fun of has pushed them into the right as far as I am concerned. The fact that NBC is in their pocket has shown them to be as false as the right would believe them to be. Welcome to the new world people. You watch what we want you to watch.
  • Deano · 1 year ago
    Oh please.

The fact that you treat as legitimate hate-and-fear-mongerer Malkin does the opposite to your post - t is completely tainted. Take your "the web is sacred" and "the web doesn't lie" attitude and go look through Malkin's archive and try to defend it.

And where has the outrage been for the last 10 years as Fox News both on TV and the web is basically a PR arm for this corrupt administration? Funny I don't remember seeing that on Mashable recently. What might cause the timing of this feigned outrage? I guess you too woke up and saw the latest poll numbers.

<- smells the same desperation as demonstrated by the McCain campaign in the last few days.

How about talking about the economy? Oh yeah, that's another "inconvenient truth", isn't it?

I for one enjoy Mashable and hope that this is the last and only time it takes the company of the likes of Malkin.
  • Spencer · 1 year ago
Oh please. This is legit story, and your nonsense about Fox News is quite ridiculous.
  • Unkown · 1 year ago
Deano is like every other liberal, they only want to take credit for good work. But way to cowardly to admit their own wrong doings. Does anybody talk about the Clinton administration de-regulating the morgage market in sept 1999, or the fact that they promoted sub-primes to people who did not qualify for a home previously? The answer is NO. Wake up.

The problem is these stupid liberals who want to give everything away for free, this country is built on hard working people. If you can not afford a home, rent.
  • commonsense · 1 year ago
To be fair, all that legislation you are attributing to Clinton (the president, who does not write or vote on legislation by the way) was passed with the help of Newt Gingrich and his "contract with America." Republican Congress and Senate, but a Democratic President, so therefore it must be the Democratic Parties fault, huh?
  • Jeff · 1 year ago
uh, there's nothing "big" about this ... NBC pulls or alters SNL material for rerun (online and in syndication) all the time, and occasionally edits the live version for the west coast feed. they used to do it more when people actually cared about the show.
  • longtimer · 1 year ago
Obviously, Mark, you haven't been paying attention to the history of SNL. Over the years, they've cut routines that played on the East Coast before they played on the West Coast.

Top two reasons to pull it (that you ignore):

    1. Advocacy of violence, even as a "joke", is a bad thing.
    2. The skit used classic anti-semitic tropes. See http://sanseverything.wordpress.com/2008/10/05/... for the remedial lesson.

So, basically, they pulled a video that suggested killing Jews for running a conspiracy to ruin the economy? Really?
  • Doug Stewart · 1 year ago
    Deano:
Excellent deflection. Instead of addressing why NBC might possibly be self-censoring a legitimate and funny parody sketch, you go off on a tangent.

How about you address the core issue raised here -- why did NBC pull all copies of the sketch that it had access to? Why are they deleting threads talking about it? Why have they offered no official explanation?

Their Palin parody sketches remain up, yet mysteriously a clip highly critical of Democrats and illustrative of their culpability in the current mess is deleted and sent down the memory hole.
  • Deano · 1 year ago
    Doug -

I actually did not opine on the NBC issue - I think an explanation is appropriate.

My comment was on Mashable deciding to get political for the first time I can recall, at an opprtune time, and doing so by associating with a blatant hate mongerer.

Are Republicans culpable for 8 years of the Fox News shill? Maybe, but I don't come to Mashable for this, and certainly this article proves why.
  • Chris · 1 year ago
Fox News is the closest thing to an objective news source as there is on TV. They might seem conservative since all the others are so liberal.

But then I don't expect Obama supporters to be able to think logically, or they would realize what a dangerous empty suit their candidate is.
  • Amanda Lee · 1 year ago
It's so adorable how bloggers (and the people that read them) don't seem to understand the legal liability "mainstream media" has on content. Unlike you, NBC could be held liable for defaming the people in the sketch.

Unlike Palin or other government officials, The Sandlers are private citizens and (I'd say) have a very legitimate legal case against NBC for this sketch. They probably said they'd sue if they didn't take it down. Isn't that enough? Does it HAVE to be some sort of lefty conspiracy on the part of the allegedly "in the tank" media companies? Why don''t you try reading up on media law instead of sharpening your pitchforks and lighting your torches?
  • Bill · 1 year ago
The problem with a case by the Sandlers is that they would have to demonstrate in court that they were harmed by the skit and by how much, monetarily. As such, they might win the case, but could not collect a dime. That is also how so many in the mainstream media get away with propagating things that are literally lies and not merely innuendos nowadays. No one bothers to sue because they can't collect under libel laws.

No, the socialists don't like criticism, however, and since they control 17 of the 20 major media companies in the U.S., they are in an EXCELLENT position to censor pretty much anything.
  • Mark "Rizzn" Hopkins · 1 year ago
Keeping in mind that there has been no real information from NBC on what the reasons behind the takedown are, I'm guessing the legal tactic taken by the Sandlers (if it happened) was a criminal threat, not a civil one. Even when you're joking, it's difficult to get away with 'inciting violence.'

You're right on the libel situation, though. I would imagine that it would be a nigh-impossible case to prove on that.
  • John · 1 year ago
Actually my claiming mental anguish the could have quite a claim. Second lawsuits with rich people are long drawn out and expensive things. Lastly if they spun it as anti-Semitic NBC could be looking at a bigger PR disaster then they are seeing here.
  • Deano · 1 year ago
Funny being accused of "deflection" by supporters of the campaign who has just said "we can't win by talking about the economy, so we are going into attack mode" and "we're looking forward to moving on from discussions about the economy".

So lets rally against NBC for an SNL skit being pulled when the globaly economy is melting down.

Actually I haven't heard much celebrity talk later, can you bring up the Paris Hilton/celebrity argument again?
  • Jim · 1 year ago
Great Post. Pretty crazy how networks will pull their own or edit their own shows for them to seem like homesome people.
  • Bart · 1 year ago
Are we finally gonna stop with these political posts? Seriously I did not subscribe for this kind of news! Realize that there are many foreigners reading this blog who don't care about American politics. Or at least don't care about it THAT much. We have our own channels to follow the US elections! So please stop and get back on track!
  • Mark "Rizzn" Hopkins · 1 year ago
A significant portion of our audience is:

    A) Served by NBC / Hulu
    B) Watchers of NBC / Hulu /SNL
    C) Affected by the bailout.
    D) Concerned about freedom of speech on the web.

I'm guessing you're probably a user of YouTube - so this story has implications even for you. The last sub-section brings it back around beyond the political angle - I'd suggest you read that to see how this story applies to you beyond US politics.
  • Doug Stewart · 1 year ago
    Deano:
You must be reading the LA Times who seem to be the prime propagators of the "McCain doesn't want to talk about the economy" canard. Too bad it's blatantly not true.

Or are you, like the NYT and the LAT, avoiding talking about the economy in earnest because the Democrats own a majority stake in the current mess, to put it kindly?
  • Anonymous · 1 year ago
A significant portion of your audience is:

    a) Tired of you constantly stuffing your political opinions into Mashable posts with only a thin relevance to social media.
    2) Intelligent enough to realize that Michelle Malkin is a hate-mongering idiot.
IV) Aware of the fact that you are doing this just to get sensationalist views, and has a respect factor for your blogging that is negatively correlated with the number of eyeballs who read each of your annoying posts.
  • Mark "Rizzn" Hopkins · 1 year ago
I'm pretty sure I'm in a better position to judge demographics of our audience than you. I value your input, though I respectfully disagree on all three points.
  • Anonymous · 1 year ago
I should also note that a comment of mine on your Michael Moore post was censored out. So you're one of those "free speech for me only" types, huh?
  • Mark "Rizzn" Hopkins · 1 year ago
I wasn't responsible for censoring any comments - and our general policy here is to let comments stand. In the year I've been an editor here, I've censored two comments, and both contain extremely racist and violent content. It's more likely that it was lost due to a commenting glitch than censorship.
  • WTF? · 1 year ago
I saw that clip live too -- it was brilliant.

    I LMAO-ed... Literally.

    WTF NBC!?!

FYI: I'm formerly registered Independent, but after ALL of the corruption, lies & outright failures over the last 8 years, I'll never vote Repub again, so I decided to switch, and became a Dem this year...

    Don't blame SNL.

Blame NBC. They didn't approve of this skit which is ridiculous.

    This is just downright stupid.

  • Steven W. · 1 year ago
I think this is a very good, comprehensive and fair writeup on what happened over the past week with the SNL bailout parody. It's definitely been curious that this happened and the way it happened + the possibility / likelihood such involved online censorship is a topic worthy of such coverage here. And, hulu, being the the source of such controversy, has been a subject of many Mashable columns over the past year(s) and to ignore this aspect of their online presence would be a disservice to the reading public.
  • McPOW · 1 year ago
hahah, nice job listening to Malkin there. definitely a credible source, no?

SNL Transcripts still has the video along with their transcript: http://snltranscripts.jt.org/08/08dbailout.phtml

Sorry, but it's not that funny.

It's just sad that people like the Sadlers and Soros made truckloads of cash on the backs of people like me who actually work for a living.

The video is still up on NBC.com, guys. Deep breaths please.

  • Charles · 1 year ago
The video is available on Hulu and on Youtube and on NBC's website. Based on the transcript I saw on Malkin's site, the only thing that was censored was the reference that the couple should be shot (which was funny, but unfortunately unairable). Relax Republicans...relax.
