Bravos, cool post. AccuTunes merits a mention. Winner of Webby People's Choice Award (Radio).

I keep flip-flopping between Last.fm, Pandora, and Slacker - they all have their strengths and weaknesses... usually Slacker wins out for features and customizability, Pandora for discovery, and Last.fm for tag/mood specific listening
  • Tom · 1 year ago
    I'm a Slacker :)

I've ended up listening to Slacker almost exclusively now...good list, thanks!
  • Helen Mosher · 1 year ago
I like Playlist.com for embeddable playlists/mixtapes of mp3s on the web. Interface is a bit more user-friendly than Seeqpod, IMHO. and I LOVE blip.fm!
  • reddknight · 1 year ago
This is waay too many choices--I have settled down on Pandora.

Ok, I am jaded again and will proceed to trying a bunch of these out.
  • chris · 1 year ago
Another annoyed reader for the lack of hypem.com - Hype Machine. Simply elegant in concept and implementation.
  • gaston monescu · 1 year ago
the 'trend' im enthusiastic about is bands that have their music available online, no holds barred.
im also encouraged by the torrenting textbook trend... "the future is free"
  • randall · 1 year ago
Slacker is also really great for music discovery. You can adjust how much "discovery" you want and it also gives listers full band bios with images as well as album reviews for each track that is played.

Makes it nice to hear new music and learn about bands.
  • Nathan Chase · 1 year ago
yeah, Slacker worked great for a while, but then the "undiscovered" bands it gave me were always the same... so it got a little repetitive. The best I could do was to reseed it with the FineTune sliders to give a slightly new pack of songs... but I ended up getting a lot of repeats.

In addition I can recommend tunesbag -> Music is a social issue, so tunesBag allows you to share your library and playlists with your friends

  • Alex · 1 year ago
    Good list.
    You should try Fairtilizer. fairtilizer.com
  • T-Mad · 1 year ago
Great list - definitely look forward to trying out some of these sites. I'm always looking for good streaming music sites.

Try mine out as well - T-Mad's Music. The site has had a presence on the Internet since August, 1997 (with a brief hiatus - got married).

Free site but requires sign up with username and password to listen. Streaming soul/R&B, funk, P-Funk, jazz, disco, old school rap, house, neosoul, and other forms of less commercial music. Also has a full blog area, complete with RSS feed.

  • Tomas · 1 year ago
Here you can listen to songs recorded from radiostations, make playlists or download mp3:s.
  • mj · 1 year ago
in addition to hype machine, what about imeem? did i miss it?
  • miguel · 1 year ago
    Hey People,

I have a great site to add to your list! http://Somafm.com

Various channels and commercial free! Clickhops is my favorite.
  • Alan · 1 year ago
You should add Jango to the music discovery section - one of my favorites.

    http://www.jango.com
  • Shani · 1 year ago
I love www.1.fm ... Jamz is the the best streaming hip hop station out there! They should have gotten mentioned
  • Ridhima · 1 year ago

I have to say I spend 1 hour listening throught that list. AH.FM All i have to say is wow!!! i just found my new home for Trance.. looks like its all FREE 192k and they support all players (quicktime) for me.

Its all exclusive dj live sets, but best of all their community of fans is HUGE!!!

  • jt · 1 year ago
    i use http://www.beatport.com, pretty cute
  • mainephotonut · 1 year ago
I was once a Pandora devotee, but for music discovery, Slacker rules.

But when you know what you want, and you want a playlist to share with others...check out IMEEM.

    www.Imeem.com

Of course....now I am going to have a good look at this list and try a bunch of them, maybe the grass is greener someplace else?
  • Jeff · 1 year ago
free.napster.com is great, but upgrading to the full napster is better on the sound quality front. sure, you've got to pay, but you can do a lot more than just listen for that $13 a month.
  • Denise · 1 year ago
I listen to imeem every day as background music at work. You can create your own playlists (I have at least a dozen) and it is rare for me to not be able to find a song I like. Project Playlist was my favorite site until too many of their songs came up missing, ruining my playlists. imeem's lists are easier to update if, on a rare occasion, a song should disappear into the ether.

what about jogli? the best music site in the neighborhood
  • Lucas Gillan · 1 year ago
You should definitely check out AccuRadio (and its Webby-award winning interface, AccuTunes). I like Pandora and last.fm, but sometimes I don't want to hear the same thing over and over again for very long. The AccuRadio subchannel system makes for really widely varying programming while still being tailored to more specific tastes.
  • gaston monescu · 1 year ago
    best band streaming site: thewoodsmen.net
all of their music(like 10 albums or so), and
its pretty varied n terms of style, sometimes i
trip that its all the same band

Great list, but the best out there may be Spotify. Check it out. I now use it as my library. You can search for a song you want, and it to a playlist, and adverts only come every 10 or more song plays. It also offers a radio, and given a genre choice, plays random music from that genre.

Has anyone given AYFmusic.com a go yet? ... It's a bit social netowkring but its really easy to use and allows you to search Youtube videos and you can drag and drop them into playlists you create, I set one up and got a friend to do the same and we can now share playlists with each other ... though it was worth sharing.

on april09 a new streaming portal has been launched named www.bokabox.com. Its a great portal for music lovers. Bokabox claimed that its the ultimate music box of users with the service music and music video streaming, music news, artist and band portfolio, poll, top chart, song lyric and artist gallery. But it will be appreciated if you please let us know whether this site is a ultimate music box or not.
