Mashable - The Social Media Guide: 2009/01/08/google-maps-mashups-tools/

  • Carl Hancock · 11 months ago
Speaking of Google Map mashups, we are working on a new WordPress plugin that will be out in the next 2 weeks or so.

It is a Mapeed for WordPress plugin that will allow you to geotag your blog posts, feed the data to Mapeed, and show a Mapeed powered Google Map of all your geotagged posts.

Mapeed allows you to do high powered map point clusters that load quickly. If you have worked with Google Maps you will know that if you have hundreds (sometimes thousands) of points on a map that is increases the load time and speed of the interface. Mapeed solves this problem with quick map point clustering. You can see a demo here: http://www.crunchvision.com

We don't run Mapeed but are building a WordPress plugin to easily integrate Mapeed with your site. It provides for a quick and easy way to geotag posts, insert customizable Google Maps into your posts and pages, and automatically feed your data to the Mapeed service.

    Keep your eyes out.

I used to use Mapquest until I found out how much more accurate Google Maps is. Now I use no other map source. Have my business listed there.

Carl Hancock, that is awesome about the WP plugin. That I will need to see and try out. Will look for it soon.

After June 1 2008, it was illegal for the city's more than 6,000 cab drivers
to use the old zone system.
    See for additional details.

The winery and "where do I end up if I dig a deep hole" function are obviously the best. I wonder what exposure these elements of google maps will acheive within the general population. As more and more people go digital and internet access expands, I bet these services will become much more valuable.

@Carl The WP widget based on Mapeed sounds interesting! outside.in has a widget that geotags blog posts from any platform and plots them on a map (sized for sidebars or archive pages). It's a neat way for readers to browse stories. Check them out: blog.outside.in/2008/11/20/outsidein-storymaps-getting-started

A very very useful list of Google Mashups. They give me some ideas for Italian mashups.
I'm a bit astonished that I found only few mashups in Italian.
A good list to be translated.
