Mashable - The Social Media Guide: 2008/09/02/google-chrome-2/

I have to admit too, I like chrome a lot aswell.

I wonder if it will beat out Firefox 3's recent "record" for most downloads in a 24 hour period?
  • Kendall · 1 year ago
Hey, watching your video from this post. Your voice comes in and out, not terribly clear.
  • LGR · 1 year ago
I am impressed with Chrome. It is fast, lighter and has some nice features. There are still some things missing from it that might come yet. I like the way Firefox can be extended using addons and if/when Chrome supports addons and/or similar features I can see me using it more.
  • Adam Ostrow · 1 year ago
fact: I am reading this post in Chrome because Firefox refuses to play sound with video ... pretty impressed, though will miss some of the extensions/greasemonkey scripts

It's bloody fast! How fast? Check this out: http://tinyurl.com/ChromeBench

I agree, Chrome is my default browser from now on! It rocks!!
  • carl · 1 year ago
Is it possible that Chrome is faster because it has none of the extensions that Firefox has?
  • Phil · 1 year ago
  • Adam Hirsch · 1 year ago
without plugins/extensions and especially without more control (the options right now are very weak), I'm sticking to FF3 or Safari if I needed speed...

However, I've noticed that now keeping 2 browsers open is a lot easier for separating out work/jobs... (Chrome is Gmail and Google Reader, FF3 is everything else).

What I do know is that it sure beats the heck out of Mozilla's Prism.

    Mark,

There is absolutely no way I would EVER USE THIS BROWSER. Why?

I bring your attention to Clause 11:

    "11. Content license from you

11.1 You retain copyright and any other rights you already hold in Content which you submit, post or display on or through, the Services. By submitting, posting or displaying the content you give Google a perpetual, irrevocable, worldwide, royalty-free, and non-exclusive license to reproduce, adapt, modify, translate, publish, publicly perform, publicly display and distribute any Content which you submit, post or display on or through, the Services. This license is for the sole purpose of enabling Google to display, distribute and promote the Services and may be revoked for certain Services as defined in the Additional Terms of those Services.

11.2 You agree that this license includes a right for Google to make such Content available to other companies, organizations or individuals with whom Google has relationships for the provision of syndicated services, and to use such Content in connection with the provision of those services."

WTF? Basically, any data you enter Google owns. Come on - get serious. Why would anyone use a browser with these terms?
  • mark · 1 year ago
I second what Kendall said about the audio.

    MashableMan:

They already do this through Google Search.
Now they do it through Chrome. It doesnt mean anything in practice.

I just realised Facebooks UI is proper screwed up in Chrome, alot of the features do not function correct, can anyone confirm this?
  • roar · 1 year ago

  • Rick in Phoenix · 1 year ago
I can't wait to try it. It looks like it's going to be great once they get all of the bugs out.

javascript support is screwed up ?? anlamdim
  • Tony · 1 year ago
Thanks for the confirmation roar, maybe this is a blessing in disguise for me, more work, less facebook lol
  • MashableMan · 1 year ago
    @Rune

Sure - for GOOGLE SERVICES. But what about all the other services on the web where you enter content ...... using Google Chrome - they own ALL OF THIS.

    It's really fked up.

When i view Mashable with Chrome i get this... "The following plug-in has crashed: Shockwave Flash". It made my widow minus down.
  • Joel · 1 year ago
I'm really impressed with this and stylistically, it is in keeping with Google's standard of all bite and no bark...
somehow, bare bones bad ass operability trumps all.
  • Colin · 1 year ago
It's lack of toolbars use means I can see Chrome taking off on Netbook sized beasts, but I won't be deserting FF3 just yet.

Frankly, speed doesn't mean all that much to me - if a page opens in 0.13s or 0.35s, it isn't going to wreck my day. If a page load is actually slow, I switch to another tab and carry on with that.

Memory isn't a deal-breaker either. No matter what a slab of RAM costs here in the UK, it'll be about half that elsewhere. My memory use suits my memory load - I don't get crashes ever in FF3.

I do lots of research and personal "fun reading/watching". I've set up my favourites and bookmarks to reflect this. I like being able to SEE my "most used" right there on-screen in front of me, not hidden behind a plethora of other tabs.

Here's another thought. Why are the comments about Chrome all written by men? Where are the women?

Is Chrome just TOO blank a canvas? Maybe we'll see some thoughts from a female viewpoint later today?

Guy comments are pretty much "Look...shiny" and I'd like to hear a different perspective. I know browsers and search tools are regarded as unisex and we are all supposed to think alike, but that isn't the reality I observe.

Finally, I'd have liked to have seen a bit more accessibility built in from the start, but I except Chrome is still very much a beta product. I just hope Google don't get too focussed on the "we must be minimalist" doctrine.

Google’s Chrome is aimed at Windows, not IE

This is no longer about browser but about the an entire marketplace spread between desktop, mobile and web. With Chrome, Google’s taking a shot at Windows, not paltry Internet Explorer

I’ve covered this in more detail on my blog

  • media buff · 1 year ago
i'm willing to try it out just to see if it works more efficiently than FireFox... if it's faster than Firefox and isn't IE, then i'll use it

Will not move over from FF yet. Would miss the Addons, especially the likes of Informenter and AddBlockPlus far too much. Expect these will come in time if Chrome is treated like FF in allowing other to develop Addons.

Hey i need to know about how to display the search terms in Google Chrome tat i previously had entered in the text box.eg)In google search box the words i type are displayed again when i type the first letter. IE i think it had it default. If i could know how to set that in Chrome it ll be very useful.
  • Kor · 1 year ago
This isn’t something isolated to me, either. It’s a common ailment (but apparently not affecting 100% of the Safari using population) that when you type something into a text box, the last character gets truncated. Whenever I use WordPress to edit a blog post, Safari will do all sorts of weird stuff to re-format what I wrote for me, adding and removing random paragraph tags.

Google chrome was discussed on CNBC last Friday which I have it transcribed on my site. Good interview which describes Chrome's objective as attempting to elevate the overall innovation of all browsers.

What does Goggle versus Firefox achieve? The two companies are across the road from each other and could have collaborated to create a truly awesome/powerful browser to finally put IE out to pasture. But no. This changes nothing.
