Don't care what you and CN say: I'm gonna hate it on principle. ;)
  • Ben Gold · 2 years ago
I love it, but I think they are just getting started, it's day 1 after all.

Well as I anticipated in my comment to the previous post on Pownce, my ass has well and truly been bitten!

As you say, if in the fully-fledged release we get support for all major IM protocols, coupled with Kevin Roses' not insignificant pull, we might just have one IM to rule them all.
  • RBA · 2 years ago
Double review witin 24 hours. Sweeeeet!!
Can I get some of that too? :-)
  • Ben Gold · 2 years ago
Technically the first one wasn't a review, we didn't have an account then.
  • anuj · 2 years ago
havent seen such a glowing review of a service on mashable for a long time..

it must be good! wondering how long since they have been building it...

  • Stan Schroeder · 2 years ago
Well, if you read it carefully, you'll see that there are a couple of 'ifs' there. We like it, but it has to deliver on some key points or else it might not go very far.
  • Pete Cashmore · 2 years ago
Either that, or Stan's on recreational drugs.
  • Stan Schroeder · 2 years ago
Evil doctor stopped giving me blue pills.
  • Aziz K. · 2 years ago
I wish someone had an invitation that I could borrow ... looks really good
  • Egor Bacardi · 2 years ago
    looks pretty
  • Allen Stern · 2 years ago
Anuj - check out my video review, I think it complements Stan's review above.

And Pete, I wanted to hate it too - I even say that in my video :)
  • Pete Cashmore · 2 years ago
    Great video. ;)
  • Mark M. · 2 years ago
You sound very excited in the video. Very excited.

Nice review, I am dying to check this out.
  • shelbinator · 2 years ago
But...but...what about mobile support? Talking about group messages as THE feature is understandable, but for a lot of Twitheads, staying connected via SMS is THE feature that makes Twitter worth putting up with.
  • Adam · 2 years ago
"Send files to one person, everyone, or a group of people - we’ve been waiting for this feature for all our online lives."

    You seriously must be kidding?

Have you ever used, oh I don't know, E-MAIL?
  • Pete Cashmore · 2 years ago
Your ideas are intriguing to me and I wish to subscribe to your newsletter.
  • Benoit · 2 years ago
I can't wait for an invitation ! I am a great fan of Kevin Rose and his applications.
  • bam · 2 years ago
i can understand what the buzz is all about, people are generally having a really bad experience with twitter (bad experience as in, not satisfying enough) i'm not sure pownce is really a big deal, thought/file/event sharing with friends and public is not unique to internet, unless you really don't know your way around email, ftp, torrents, blogs, forums, and etc...

i really don't see any substance in pownce or twitter

most people are saying, wow what a great site, but what's the "great" thing? please elaborate!
  • George · 2 years ago
In Holland a company called Numpa (www.numpa.nl) seems to work on the same stuff. Tho this is hot out there. They're still in beta, but a friend who can read dutch (!!) told me they plan to introduce this later on.
  • Bert · 2 years ago
If anybody has an extra invite could you send me one at norbiu [at] gmail? Thanks!
  • Brenden · 2 years ago
Ok this is somewhat ridiculous, can't you already do the SAME THING with email??

Seems pretty stupid as the article says we've been waiting for this our entire 'online lives'....email was around almost from the first year the internet was born.

    You guys are silly!
  • Pete Cashmore · 2 years ago
Who needs email anyway? Carrier pigeons do the exact SAME THING.
  • Todd · 2 years ago
    I can has ( pownce ) invite?
  • Matthew Berman · 2 years ago
who the hell wants a desktop app
  • steve · 2 years ago
I don't get it. Why?! Oh well, I'm just waiting for the Trillian/Facebook plugin/IM. :-P
  • beyownce · 2 years ago
    this is stupid and useless.
  • KillerStartups.com · 2 years ago
Interesting to see how it'll evolve.
Let's give it a try, and who knows, maybe they become the next KillerStartups.com!
  • nemof · 2 years ago
I refuse to give up Miranda for love or money, however if it could be integrated then I might actually care about pownce. Really, who needs another social networking site(with files)?
  • K · 2 years ago
Sheesh Stan, learn the difference between it's (it is) and its (possessive) already...
  • nicknasty · 2 years ago
can i log into my aim/google/yahoo account with it?
  • Chuck Reynolds · 2 years ago
I'm excited about pownce, I've also been waiting for a better product than simply Miranda (although I *heart* Miranda) or meebo. File sharing sucks and at best works half the time.

For team projects this is going to be awesome.

For getting all my friends to be able to talk to me once I have it - I hope it later integrates aol for one but also msn/jabber(goog)/yahoo etc.

As for your comment about the desktop app. Adobe AIR is extremely limited with its beta app right now but for the 1.0 release they're opening a lot more functionality - we're just waiting on Adobe for that.

Good review - thanks - can't wait to get my invite key.
  • Michael · 2 years ago
if anyone needs an invite to pownce i have around 10 or so left, first come first serve. so if you want one, Message me at

    michaelthecoolman@yahoo.com
  • Jake Lockley · 2 years ago
MSN Messenger allows you to send files to more than one person. Maybe someone should tell Stan, he's obviously not done an IM client comparison.
  • Pete Cashmore · 2 years ago
  • JOMAR · 2 years ago
I wonder how will this fare now that tumbleloging is starting to lift off. Someone i can see an overlap of sorts. Or am I wrong?
  • Sven · 2 years ago
Indeed, Numpa does look like Pownce. Will this be be for Pownce what Jaiku is for Twitter?
  • User · 2 years ago
    So....how's this different/better than email?
  • Nick · 2 years ago
    I would love a pownce invite :-)

    nick at nickperez.org

    Thanks!
  • Wendell Raphael · 2 years ago
Hey! I've been translated this article to my blog, in portuguese.
  • Brian Bane · 2 years ago
I'm quite curious and would appreciate a pownce invite

    mrgreenghost@gmail.com

    thanks much.
  • Dos · 2 years ago
This is the dumbest thing I have ever heard of. How many other millions of file sharing IM clients are out there? How many other social networking sites?
  • mossiwo · 2 years ago
    umm...?
  • d3bruts1d · 2 years ago
Could use an invite if anyone has some available.

    d3bruts1d [at] gmail [dot] com

    Thanks.
  • richard · 2 years ago
I just wish one of these pownce reviews would fill in the blank: "and unlike email, with pownce you can ____". I use twitter and jaiku alot, and I always thought the public nature of the conversations was a feature rather than an annoyance. When I want to talk to one or more of my friends in private, I use email and IM.

Or is the appeal that it's one interface that can be used for both public and semi-private conversation?? If I ever get an invite I'll try to see for myself, but I doubt I can drag my friends to yet another social network at this point.
  • Simon · 2 years ago
I am guessing this will be a popular application really fast. I am just thinking that a Facebook app will be much more useful. Facebook groups can be used for this purpose, and everyone is already on there. Facebook is really starting to take over the internet.
But if anyone has invitations, please invite me on 1psGBNsqdvUQflHm@spambox.us

    thanks
  • robert · 2 years ago
I would love to test pownce
so please, if you could spare me an invite

Sounds interesting - would be nice if anyone can send an invite to cd 'a-t' wavecon - d e
  • Jeff C · 2 years ago
And I sure as hell hope that Pownce’s protocols are done in such a way to enable Miranda/Gaim/Trillian support, because without it, it will be much harder for people to become real everyday users.

Couldn't agree with this statement more! I'm sure the number one reason most people use anything on the net these days is because one or more of their friends are using it.
  • Cesar · 2 years ago
Fu$k This...I work for DIGG and this Pownce shit sucks!
  • franto · 2 years ago
is it possible to have 1 invitation? thanks

  • Bikram · 2 years ago
Hey, can U send me an invite for this pownce? Plz plz plz.
  • Jeremy · 2 years ago
    I have some extra invites:

jeremy dot farrar at gmail dot com
  • Adam Sweet · 2 years ago
It's still buggy. For example, when you have the browser/IM thingy open and you're logged in, you should automatically be logged into the site, but you're not. So if you reply to a comment, you'll lose your reply at the login page. I find that very annoying.

Also, when you minimize the IM thing, it doesn't go to tray like other IMs do. That means it's taking up valuable space.

And so far it's only techgeeks using it, which means it's a waste of time for bands and musicians or other artists. Maybe when it is opened up to the average user it will be able to compete with Myspace for bands.
  • frank · 2 years ago
    hey!
it would be great if anyone has an invite left for me.
please send it to dittrich.frank [at] web.de

What can you do with Pownce that you can't do IM and email?
  • richard k. · 2 years ago
this is a nice review, i believe kevin rose has a good thing going with this, and being that they have a terrific app running off of adobe air, they should get somewhere far with this. i would love to have an invite from you guys, i have the pounce app for air and i would love to use it, but i cant without an invite, so could you please send me one. email is richardkillingsworth2006@gmail.com. thanks and cheers.
  • Kumar · 2 years ago
    Hi, I’d like an invite.
  • James · 2 years ago
I got my invitation and installed Pownce. I don't get it. Correction... I do get it, but I don't see how using Pownce will be advantageous for me. All the features offered are already available in email, blogs, IM, and facebook. I don't think a simple consolidation of features is enough to penetrate the market. Who is the market? I could be wrong but I think the market is Geeks and nerds who are already predisposed to using best of breed applications for individual tasks. To be truly disruptive, your service must be 10 times cheaper, 10 times faster, or 10 times better. I don't see this from Pownce. I'm curious why Rose didn't put his energies into building a similar app for heavy Digg users. You know... to bring digging to the desktop. Doing a tight Digg integration in a desktop app seems like a better play to me since Digg already has gobs of users.

If anyone can send me an invite I would really appreciate it:

Sorry, but this article really misses the boat. It is twitter's simplicity that is so appealing in this hectic overcomplicated world. It is easy and straightforward to use. You can send to the whole world or just one person. What Pownce has that I like is the option to send a message to "sets" of people. Twitter needs that functionality to make it a bit better I believe.

However, where Pownce doesn't pownce very well is with SMS text messaging via the cell phone. Adolescents and young people (heck all of us) are with our cell phones 24/7 ... and I MUST has this feature as I use twitter for educational purposes. You can easily get your EFL English students to brainstorm in a fury with twitter .. and the next day, everything is neatly listed on the Web to start the project or discussion. Pownce requires you to be tied to a web-based interface and computer.

I need SMS for educational dynamics, sorry! twitter indivudually crafted designs are much more funky, interesting and fun, rather than selecting from 4 polished everybody-has-the-same templates in Pownce.

I don't care about file attachments for fast off the cuff snippets exchanges .... I'll keep trying Pownce to discover its benefits, but I will use twitter more (but wish it did have "sets").

    THanks
  • Chris · 2 years ago
Ummm, Pownce. I can't wait until it they let the beast loose at full speed. I think it will do well.
