This is really kind of a depressing state of affairs. Say what you want about Drupal, powerful, extensible, whatever. If it looks bad in presentation, then what else really matters. And from all I've seen, Drupal is about as first generation as templates can get. I'd be embarrassed to be part of this project, after looking at all the outstanding template work done with Wordpress and Joomla. The Drupal people better put up or shut up. Designers for Wordpress and Joomla are making Drupal look like something for kindergardeners. Who cares if you have a Ferrari engine inside your tricycle.

CMS Lounge(http://www.cmslounge.com/) make gorgeous Drupal themes. A couple are even free. Clean design and easy to use. I have used them on 15 of my drupal sites.

Half of these themes are fairly ugly, you'll find better looking ones if you browse some sites that are less restricting in the license on the design. (cc2.5 vs GPL).

While it is fairly easy to do Drupal theme CSS validation , it is not so straight forward to validate XHTML.

CSS is usually static and content independent, which is main idea with style sheet. What you need to do is to pass it to CSS validator and get your answer.

XHTML is generated and the structure depends on site configuration and content. It happens that turning on or off some Drupal feature makes site W3C compliant or non-compliant. User defined content also can (and often does) make page XHTML non-compliant.

In practice, you can determine when Drupal theme is breaking W3C XHTML standard, but if it is compliant, it is very hard to prove.
