I was suspended for shell bidding when I was bidding on a product using university internet. This was about 6-7 years ago and every one knows that when you are using university network, the output ip address is mostly the same especially if it is within a building or department. Unfortunately Ebay was not smart enough to realise that (this is in 1999) and suspended about 45 students who were buying the same book beginning of the semester for the same class (total 400 students). Anyway, even after 7 years, I could not keep an ebay account to sell. I had 2 accounts since then and everytime my sales hit $10,000 i get suspended because of my past suspension. So what did i do? Started selling from my own website. Especially with a lot of tools out there, people are starting to selling from their own site and only using Ebay for Marketing not actual sales of product.(notice the $1 dollar sales)
Keeping Google Checkout, increasing Paypal fees and sellers fees was another factor. Sellers would have saved a lot of money using Google Checkout and increased their listing on Ebay. The increase of sellers fees was to "weed out the small sellers" according Meg Whitman. It definately backfired. Arrogance at best.
Currently more Ebay sellers are from Asia than local, so it turns people off when an individual product have to be shipping from HK.
Good Luck Ebay. They have enjoyed the monopoly and it is time to try something else. I am starting to love AMAZON a lot more. They have grown a lot and coming up with new stuff every now and then. Not to mention facebook and other sites who have created Marketplace. People do not need to use Ebay to sell books or small items.
However, $15 a month for an ebay store is hardly something to argue about, especialy when they allow stores to add store listings for so cheap. There are a lot of benefits of opening an ebay store over your own ecommerce store somewhere else. For one thing, you get to feed off of ebays MASSIVE traffic.
They will have to give sellers a break sooner or later, but it won't come in a slashing their prices permenantly, it will come in special day only 2 cent listing promotions and open an ebay store promotions.
They may have a good reason for raising prices; they keep only the best sellers on ebay, the ones that know what they are doing, and they will have less sellers to compete with. It all depends where you stand.
