I can't help but post this: I wrote about this idea a month ago- I wonder if they correlate? http://www.newantisocial.com/2008/09/musing-sho...

    interesting...
but does youtube get any of the profit that this would make?

Full Disclosure. I co-founded Overlay.TV so am clearly biased but if you get a chance, suggest you take a look at http://overlay.tv as we provide a platform for YouTube, and many other video sharing sites, that pushes the boundaries on user interaction and monetization far beyond the YouTube current announcements and toolset.

uh, is this the end of overlay.tv and their competitors?
  • Rob Lane · 1 year ago
Only if you believe that Overlay.TV's business is purely UGC, which is isn't, and only f you believe YouTube is the only video site, which it isn't

Well I was hoping to beat YouTube to the punch on making an announcement. I have been developing this on my site NowScene.com. It seemed only logical for YouTube which is now becoming the place for artists to get exposure, to incorporate links for people to purchase MP3s. I show a link to Amazon next to every live music video I display. Works pretty well. But because the video title also contains location information. I inform my customers to click the link then remove any extra text from the artist information for better results. But I will make improvements in the future.

More power to YouTube's success with this. I certainly believe in the concept since I developed this too. More improvements in the future since this the site is still early stage. But I wanted it documented that I did this first before YouTube made their announcement today.

What percentage does Youtube/Google receive off of a purchase? This looks to be the beginnings to massive advertising on Youtube.

    Craig,

I can tell you that under a standard agreement with Amazon. You can expect a minimum of 10%. It can add up quickly. Plus the Indies bands that play in clubs have thier music on Amazon as well. Plus bios on the bands/artists. amazon has been very friendly witht he indies to upload and get paid for their music. I downloaded an MP3 and the Albumn art and song were automaticly placed iinto my iTunes so I was able to added it easily to my iPod.

Thats one of the reasons why I added amazon to my video site.

Great concept nowscene.com, but I don't seem to be directly linked to the artist via the amazon button click - is this intentional?

As for Youtube venturing into the music market, I'm surprised this hasn't happened earlier. Sites like imeem and Myspace have been offering click through options for a long time now. It's interesting that Youtube is just now getting into the CPM game, especially with their music-hungry audience. And another shameless plug but I can't help but say I told you so: http://tinyurl.com/5f5ymh

Only if Amazon is doing something on the sly. You should be able to go into the site even from international. I don't believe at this time you can purchase Amazon MP3 downloads from anywhere but the USA. They will most certainly change that in the future.

Thanks for the compliments. Still early stage and will be making improvements for the future. YouTube has a bigger budget than me. ;-) I hope you tried the StreetView I integrated on the scene map. Just click "Take me to the scene". I'm really trying to get my customers to engage with the video content. I want them to feel like they are there on the scene.

I apologize JDBB I misread your post. You stated Intentional not International. No itis not intentional. The link works. When you click on the Amazon MP3 download button it takes the YouTube Video title and passes this to Amazon. Sometimes the title has location text in it. So if you remove the text leaving only the artists information then your search results will improve. I mention this in the text below the button. I’m not as tightly integrated as YouTube is with their videos.

I welcome any other comments seeing as I had to come out of hiding today. This is the first time people have seen my site.

    Thanks,
    Randy

I think this is awesome and cant wait for it to be complete. Especially for a company like myself that specializes in creating branded online video content for advertisers. I think this is just the tip of the ice berg when it comes to video sites coming up with unique ways to get the user to make an action without leaving the video. That is key to conversions with video.

This is definitely a great initiative, and a well thought out avant-garde marketing tactic.

I'm sure they won't have any problems finding an increasing amount of willing partners to sell their wares as the years roll by. However, is this going to reduce the quality of the content on Youtube?

Will it simply become another advertising portal?
