Mashable - The Social Media Guide: 2007/09/19/digg-users-not-digging-diggspace/

Who would be surprised? Not every site should try to be a social network. That's just stupid to try to integrate profiles into a news site. With the success of MySpace, everyone has been brainwashed into thinking "Oh, we should add profiles to our site too!"

P.S. this is why I use Reddit. It's simple, doesn't try to be a social network, and it doesn't have immature people who rate all the good comments down.

Their Alexa drop says it all. They are not growing, VCs want ROI. So they think that social networking is all the rage, so lets just do the same thing everyone else is doing.

A couple of months ago I said on my blog that we'll see websites starting to add social networking features, and that in a couple of years these features will be as common as comments are today. Looks like that's what Digg is doing - doesn't mean they're turning into a social network.

What they're doing makes sense to me (though I agree they should work on fixing the comments and making the pages load faster). I can also understand why people are complaining.

The great thing? We'll all get to see how this move affects Digg's traffic over the next few months. Expect a lot of people to be watching this very closely.

One thing I have noticed about the new digg:

When you view the stories your friends have most recently submitted, there is no digg button next to each story on the list. If you actually want to digg their submissions, you have to click on the individual page of their digg submission and hit the digg button there. This is a huge pain in the ass. They've just killed one of the best social features of digg.

I think the Digg community are a bunch of idiots, all they do is moan and moan. The new site and the recent new design launch is great.

They just follow Netscape.com and miscalculated what their users want/need. Funny irony there.

And really - what is Digg at the end of the day? A social news aggregating site with a bunch of geeks that blocks ads, don't click on the ads that are not blocked and whine about anything and everything, that someday hopes to break even like Yelp and all the other web 2.0 sites that cannot monetize and who's only game plan is to be acquired.

I like it, I like to see what my users are digging and commenting on. I never used digg's friends feature before and even abandoned digg for quite a while just because the community has gotten a bit insane and all the kevin rose fan boys. The new features and provide usefulness and community building. The problem with digg and the sensationalism is the few very vocal users.

I agree with Jeff about being able to see what my friends, who I have interests in common with, are digging.

It also makes sense, if you do want to social network, to use a site that combine features rather than using different sites.

It seems that too many people are complaining about it without giving it a chance and if you are not interested in the social networking features then don't use them.
