actually the founder of this site presented at TED 07 and that is almost certainly why GOOG wanted it - they want him.

An interesting purchase. I would most definitely say they have plans to use this with Google Analytics.

Rosling is a professor of international health, i doubt his ambition is to work for google; more likely is he to join gate's philantrophic efforts. the deal brings the trendalyzer team, not the whole gapminder foundation, to google.

The info overload facing a typical web user is leading to an increased need for information and data literacy. This seems like a good move for Google: finding ways to serve an increasingly information-literate audience. We're maxing out the old Web data formats - hypertext and pictures. Google won the public data retrieval race; winning a public data presentation race seems like a logical next step.
