If it's pointless, why even mention it? If you ignore it, it won't bother you. Like Ann Coulter. Besides, Google's probably busy putting all kinds of exciting features in the GPhone. Lasers and stuff.

Kristen, if you ever call another Gmail innovation "pointless" again, I'll fire you. Understand?

Pre-fetching? That kind of feature is just what Gmail needed. Does that sound pointless to you? No, I didn't think so.

Gmail is already the best thing since the wheel. I heard the guy who invented Gmail is getting a Nobel, just for changing the lives of countless people with a better email service. I think it was Al Gore. He works at Google you know.

I really do feel much safer knowing the GoogleBot reads my email. It's like having your Mom look through your Internet History. It's just comforting to know the Big G is looking out for us.

I think this post could have been much shorter:

"I don't understand how Gmail works, and it seems Google is unlikely to redesign their system so that it works just like every other mail client on the Web. Unless their improvements resemble a Zimbra or Outlook-style makeover, I am not remotely interested."

good critique of gmail, but i think prefetching is hardly pointless. prefetching and the use of the new javascript for faster performance is useful to everybody.

It would be nice to have the option to group or not group...

I agree with all of you, actually. I am rather excited about the upcoming pre-fetching. I'm still waiting for more consumer-based improvements to the Gmail system. As much as we all love Google's "under-the-hood" approach, the majority of what Google has announced today is functionality that's clearly been in the works for some time. And please, Mr. Fake Pete, don't fire me until after Troll week is over. This is just too darn fun.

I noticed tonight that I have a new pop-up when I mouse over my list of chat buddies in gmail. There is a new 'more' menu with an option for 'Contact details'. Unfortunately, clicking makes the main window area blank.

Has anyone else seen this? Does it work for anyone else? A hint of the (sorely needed) new Google contact manager? [If you ask me they should just buy plaxo]

This is crazy, for a start they should get gmail out of BETA. They keep on adding features , but maybe pushing it out completely as gmail and not gmail(BETA) would be a good start.

Um...what? You seriously don't like threaded conversations? That's like...Gmail's best feature, along with "View As HTML" for PDF and DOC files.

It was only a few months ago that realized how I take those amazing features for granted.

Now I just wish they would turn on MY IMAP already, since EVERYONE ELSE seems to have it...especially people who have no use for it.

I think prefetching is rate, once they provide the offline feature Gmail will rock even more. Already the storage capacity have increased to 4.5GB.

    Not everyone has IMAP.
