Absolutely no means to offend anyone, but I've got a question (honestly, I just want to know)... what's the difference between Second Brain and FriendFeed?
  • Mig · 1 year ago
Muhahaha! Serenity, the difference is HUGE. Gargantuan I might add! The best answer to your question comes from an article at Search Engine Journal:
While the FriendFeed content is generated by users from their services, it is not as dynamic as the collections of data on SecondBrain. One might call Friendfeed a very good ticker tape of activity, while SecondBrain is an interactive Library. With upcoming features like advanced site search and messaging, SecondBrain will further delineate itself from this “perceived” competition, where no competition actually exists. The two developments are actually completely different in design and purpose.

    Hello Kristen!

A great article about a startup with great potential. Comparisons abound every time an author writes about a startup it seems. I suppose this is natural after all. As Mig pointed out, Friendfeed is essentially a component of what can be done at Secondbrain, or at least it is now.

Trimmed down development has been the trend since Twitter and Facebook hit the scene. My only question is: "Is this the right way to develop?" With a platform like Secondbrain, users can be dealt a hand of features and services that combined with the "Library" aspect - provide great usability.

This by itself is not all that powerful, but combined with attention savings, user familiarity, singular tools and a focused commmunity - Secondbrain could prove to be that elusive "all in one" we all talk about.

Again, a great article Kristen! Phil

The lifestream that FriendFeed is centered around is only part of what you get in Secondbrain. Secondbrain stores your content from the various services, so you have one huge searchable library of all your bookmarks, favourites, videos etc.

You can organise them into collections that make sense to you, or you can use the tag cloud or search to find your content. Secondbrain uses the tags from your content to generate a super tag cloud that spans all your services. If you don't remember whether that video you favourited was on YouTube or Vimeo, it doesn't matter, because it's all there in Secondbrain.

I can have collections that contain YouTube videos, Slideshare presentations, delicoius bookmarks etc. all in one place, which then becomes a pretty good reference for that topic, both for myself and for others. There are more features that I haven't mentioned here, and lots in the pipeline. It's a great service. Go check it out for yourself :)

SecondBrain is quite good right now, but I can't wait till they start using the full potential in all the collected content!
