Mashable - The Social Media Guide: 2008/01/24/is-the-blogosphere-being-gamed/

I think the quick-reacting nature of the blogosphere means we'll always be stuck with bogus news stories like this. It's not such a terrible problem though, just a little annoying.
  • Sobchak · 1 year ago
I think he just hit the sweet spot.

Plus I agree it shouldn't be about a particular day.

Just delete your Myspace now, why wait?

There are so many other, better places to congregate.

    Facebook sucks too.

Then again, people like to feel that they are part of a movement so stuff like this can snowball.

There's no cycle that needs to be stopped. You can't take pee out of a swimming pool. You just get out of the pool and take a shower. That's what deleting your MySpace is like.

You are 100% right about what you said in this post. I mean out all the 10 things that guy said 8 of them you could fix yourself.
and what Sobchak said just delete your myspace today if you like facebook better.
  • SimonOwens · 1 year ago
I've seen many arguments over the last few days that I should have just deleted my account and moved on with my life, but I think this ignores one basic fact: It took me a whole five minutes to write the post.

It then quickly spread to several facebook groups and then the rest is history. Now I have interview requests with several journalists and one radio station, and I'm just going with the flow. Either way, just deleting an account doesn't do anything to highlight the problems with Myspace -- the very fact that a spokeswoman has mentioned it shows that Myspace is watching this event and taking notice.

A lot of people have pointed out that I should just install adblock. But I'm not against online advertisements, in fact I actually prefer being able to see advertisements because I find the industry fascinating. What I object to is intrusive advertisements -- ones that talk to you or try to move into your field of view.

Besides, the advertisements were just one of many issues. These are issues that Myspace has never addressed. Maybe now they will. Or they won't. We'll see?

Is the blogosphere being gamed? Sure, every diday. just look at digg, it's gaming central

Mr. Owens (I know some people view this as me being nasty, but it was just the way I was raised to address someone)

Thanks for stopping by. Yes, MySpace has problems, as does every other website in existence. There is no such thing as an "error free" site, and there probably never will be.

The issue with your list, and I will keep pointing it out since you put it out there, is that there are solutions for a good chunk of them, especially the music one. I don't like music starting instantly either, but that's why I changed my settings so that it would no longer do that. That's one down.

You say you find the advertising industry fascinating, well, then you really shouldn't want to call for any changes to the ones MySpace runs. They are an example of what is wrong with the industry as a whole, and those ads appear on numerous other sites, will you also call for them to change their ways, or will you instead go to the source of the problem, the advertisers?

Somehow I don't suspect you've ever gotten a marriage proposal from a man in the middle east, so not really a problem for you.

I'm not going to counter every point in your list, but unless you start doing this every site with problems, it just looks like an easy target was chosen.

    Just how I see it.

But most of the 10 things you said myspace has fix.
    Let me go though them.

1.My space has a thing in your setting that you can Require CAPTCHA for Friend Request. Now I don't get one spam Friend Request.

2.Have you been on myspace in the last half of year I get like 5 website glitches a month if that and I never get them when I am commenting people.

3.You just needed one to fill in this 10 thing?

4.All you have to do is go in your setting to turn music off.

5.Ok I really don't get this one after you say comment some myspace let you return to myspace profile or go back to your comments. That what you want to do after you are done.

6.I hate facebook b/c it look so boring and old. People on myspace likes to do stuff with there pages. And most of them look good if they don't its ok b/c its the person profile they should be able to do whatever they like to it.

7.You are a little right about this. But myspace has stop using the talking ads. I have not going one in like a month or 2.

8.Its not really myspace job to watch over your kids when they are on the internet. And myspace and going to start doing this new thing with it anyways.

9.You can do it myspace doesn't look at you page see if you have your email, aim and other stuff on it. I have never heard of myspace delete someone b/c of that. Most people don't even know that you are not allow to.

10.LMAO. He doesn't change he picture b/c he doesn't want people to know that its him in real life and he said it works most people don't know that its him b/c he really doesn't look like that anymore. oh he said this in a interview.

In all everyone I know has myspace and in the last year myspace has added a lot of new stuff to make it even more better then facebook. And myspace has said there is more to come. :]]

Yeah but to be fair those Middle Eastern gentlemen can be QUITE persistent! :p

More than anything I just like that people are having this conversation.

Kick em in the grill, Trav.
  • Simon Owens · 1 year ago
As far as I can tell, the only way to block the music is if you're logged into your account, but many of the times I've followed a link to a myspace page when I'm not logged in, something that I'm sure happens to a lot of people.

Either way, I return to my initial point: This post took me all of 5 minutes to write. I was venting my frustrations that I happened to be feeling at that exact moment. All of sudden a ton of blogs started running with it -- set off mainly by a reaction from your original post. Did it come off as whiny? That's because it was meant to be -- the fact that it struck a chord with so many people just shows that I'm not alone in my frustrations.

Well the thing is I could think of 10 things myspace need to change and I love myspace and HATE facebook.
  • Travis · 1 year ago
I want to know where is the January 30th is International Delete Your Facebook Day
Sry it should be January 30th is International Deactivate Your Facebook Day b/c you can delete your facebook lol

Someone with a blog should do it and start a myspace group. Tell if you are want to.
I still have a facebook I been wanting to "delete" it for months.
Its not hard there is like 20 things I hate about facebook.

From a marketing point of view its genius. As was hinted at in the article, say something controversial and its off to the races in regards to promotion of your own blog. I have no idea what the intentions were of the original blogger, but looking at it from a viral campaign point view its been pretty successful :)

I think this story says more about how stories circulate around the blogosphere and less about myspace tbh.

no one forced anyone to join any single one of those social sites. it's not a fundamental part of living like food & drink so please spare us of all that slacktivism and focus on real problems around us. Making an issue out of myspace or facebook shows one spoilt individual with too much time on their hands.

Dear Myspace - Because you claim over 200 million accounts and don't report on actual active users like Facebook (60 million), we are grouping together to delete all our empty, dead, double, and never-been-used profiles on your ad filled site so that you true numbers can shine. Don't get too excited when you see a big spike in logins on Jan 30th, it is just so we can delete our dead accounts. Cheers!

    - This is from the Facebook Event for International Delete Your Myspace Account Day > http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=8838384171

lmao myspace claim they have 200 million accounts? They do have over 200 million accounts. And they do report on how many active users they get about 65 million. And you are wrong about facebook they have 60 million users. They only have 25-30 million active users. So please don't lie and this little delete your myspace day is going to do nothing to myspace. So what if 20,000 people delete there myspaces. :]
  • Travis · 1 year ago
sry I just look up a little more and it say that myspace has 110 million active users. And facebook say it has 60 million active users but facebook only has like 60 million users in all. I mean all you have to do is log in you account 1 time a month to be a active user. So myspace would have about that many people log in every month. If it has about 220 million users right now and 110 million of them log in every month. So why do you think they are lieing or something?
  • Travis · 1 year ago
I have to tell you thing one
Myspace still has more page views than any other Web site in the world — more than 1.3 billion a day. That was from http://www.nytimes.com/2008/01/21/technology/21... and it say how many user myspace has.

    Sean,

The blogosphere is being gamed all the time using all kinds of techniques and tactics as people work to gain more attention with controversial posts. As long as money and ego are involved, this type of thing is going happen on a regular basis. Not sure why you're surprised.

    Mark
  • rainbow · 1 year ago
People buy controversial issues. This is common sense, and doesn´t need an article.

I don't understand. What is blogging about - writing about anything goes in your mind. So the boy gained traffic - good for him. Other top bloggers write about checks they've been received and still no one complains.I think he has done a legitimate thing.

    Thank you
    Dan
