I know of at least 3 sites that tried to create a classified site on the FB API, and several more who considered it, but chose not to for exactly this reason.
This is to obvious an area for FB to not enter aggressively, but many more like this and the utility of the API could be questioned.

I think this is actually a great idea for the Facebook, because it would really play off of their whole university base. If they did it well, it could be a major threat to craigslist - being able to select really specific networks (or just sticking to your own college) would be a great advantage. Think about it - selling used textbooks, furniture, and other items that college students buy and sell to each other anyway (albeit in a less structured manner).

It’ll be very interesting to see facebook build this as I’m sure they are struggling with the cost structure. As you many of you are probably aware, facebook flyers already has an awkward classifieds function to list items for sale at a minimal cost of about $5 per network.
For all intensive purposes, CollegeMedium will remain free of charge for all our users.

Great idea but question 4 is incredibly dangerous. It suggests to me that the whole premise behind facebook's closed networks was in fact to create a false economy and was not purely in the interests of secure networking.

It's a bit naive to suggest that they would trample on developers unintentionally. One of the main reasons for releasing an API, that is rarely talked about in tech blogs, is to let other people be your skunkworks, and see what works. Start getting millions of requests from an external developer? Looks like you may have found your next internal dev project.
I would never base a business on someone else's API, it's far too risky unless you're able to either transcend the parent site, or tie your site into several APIs and not be totally dependent on the host. I wish Emmanual well, but would advise him to start diversifying his offerings to add value on top of the Facebook angle. Oh, and it's "intents and purposes".

If facebook does launch a classifieds service, it doesn't matter how much better competing sites are, they'll lose simply because facebook will quickly gain traction where no competing site has been able to.
Consider ebay. I hate using it but I do because if I want to sell something, I'm much better off paying ebay a few dollars and virtually guaranteeing a sale than using any number of cheaper / better / nicer sites.
I recently launched my own college classifieds site called scribble (www.scribblehq.com). Luckily for me, it's a programming/web development exercise and not a venture. The only thing I've invested is time.
I agree with Karel - We've looked at Facebook's API, but the biggest bummer is that they don't let you keep user data. How are you supposed to market to your users if you can't grab their email address everytime someone logs in? Its as Ted said - The API is solely for ideas, and no classifieds site can compete with Facebook if they launch one. Its just a question of whether Facebook wants to take on this type of liability.

Do you know if there is a specific group targeted by this survey? Its very possible that facebook sent it out to all their users who use classified sites that leverage the FB api, because FB knows which sites you use. That would be a very underhanded move.

As far as we know, it was sent out to a handful of specific college networks. Can't confirm/deny whether they used data from those utilizing the API, but it seems unlikely: they would have wanted a response from all users, not just those predisposed to using classifieds.

Wether it's Facebook, MySpace, CNN, TedsLocalFishBait.com, or YouNameIt.com, if you think a given site is NOT going to offer classifieds or think of offering classifieds at some point, you are delusional.
And, anyone who thinks that just because Facebook or TedsLocalFishBait.com has classifieds, that no one else can compete, is also delusional. Big world we live in. To borrow a line from Lewis Black - "Here's the globe. See... Countries!"
Classifieds are one of the biggest misunderstanding of a web based business. It's fun watching everybody jump up and offer a listing service.
The first problem: few are relevant.
The second problem: these sites try to cover all colleges and end up with only a handful of of ads here or there.
The third problem: classifieds are a devalued commodity. How can you charge $1 or $10 when everyone is offering the same customer the same free ad?
The fourth problem: college students do not pay the bills. Get it? They don't put money in the pockets of these college centered listing services - period. They will spend $600 on an iPhone (want one), and 600 hours on Facebook, but they won't spend $0.60 on a classified. And when it comes time to sell that bicycle, the'll post it on Facebook, CraigsList, and TedsLocalFishBait.com if it has any traffic at all. It's not a win or loose situation.
Finally, even if, scratch that, WHEN Facebook adds classifieds, they will still lack the broader advertiser who is looking to reach college students. Trust me on this. Talk with Sally Joe Johnson about her ad in the local paper and you will begin to understand.
Now, who the hell am I to say this? First, I've worked directly with college newspapers for 11 years, in the classified ad market. Second, since March 1, CollegeClassifieds.com (as tracked by Google) has reached over 16,000 users and served 86,000 page views. I know classifieds and I know college markets.
What will work in the "college classifieds" space? Relevancy, honesty, quality listings, effective syndication, upgrade paths, marketing and a REAL understanding of who is the customer and who is the audience.
I predicted this last week when Facebook launched their new Network pages. As soon as the Network pages launched, people started using them in a Craigslist fashion to sell stuff and promote events. Facebook has a huge opportunity here and they know it.

If anyone can make the college classified site work, obviously it's going to be Facebook who can provide the traction. At Stanford I saw Greg launch supost.com which I believe later merged with Uloop.com. Someone correct this if I'm wrong, but I don't think there's been an even decent-traffic-level college classifieds site to date.

Blizzard does a similar thing with World of Warcraft. They offer a developer API and subsume the most popular plugins into the official game.
