While not directly relevant to HD content online, Adobe's announcement that Flash Player 9 Update 3 supports H.264 playback is very significant in the online video world.

Initially publicised back in August the Moviestar plugin should see many online video sites switching to H.264 content due to the superior viewing experience. But will YouTube convert their many millions of videos to H.264 or just use H.264 from this point forward?

Hulu's not quite the first either. Here's a site already using Flash player to show QuickTime MOV files encoded in H.264:

I also think Hulu's HD initiative is premature considering the bandwidth available to many home Internet users. Just how long will it take to buffer files a 2.5Mbps!

If you look at the pie chart - what you realize is that in point of fact 66% of the people surveyed are interested in HD online. As one of the lucky Hulu early users, I've had the chance to check out the HD offerings today. This is really nice! The viewing experience on Hulu is great to begin with. But the quality of the HD is really super. I expect that download is going to be an issue - but the implementation on Hulu is great.

Regarding the comments about YouTube... having used hulu for a while what is clear to me is that Hulu and YouTube are entirely different experiences with different goals. I use the two servies in entirely different ways. Since I got into hulu I have dropped my cable subscription - I'm saving close to $100 per month. I watch what I want, when I want. I get my favorite shows. I get to see new shows. I get to see old shows I loved when I was growing up. What more do I need? If hulu wants to increase the quality of their video beyond where it is right now - who am I to argue - great make my viewing experience even better. It's free - what's to complain about.

Well, I am not convinced of the statistical significance of the study, but I agree. I, too, am underwhelmed, EXCEPT for the improvement in the viewing experience online. I think it is worth it, and we are now testing our new (and relatively inexpensive) HD equipment (Canon HG10 & Sanyo Xacti HD1000)for integration into our workflow next month. I don't really expect the consumers to care, but I bet they will acknowledge the improved viewing experience.

I had originally come to post a bit of sarcastic irony amidst your "horde of angry comments." It was going to simply say "great post."
