YouTube was not blocked in Thailand as I live in Thailand and was watching Videos the whole time. It was a misconfiguration at the central proxyserver in Bangkok through which all requests out of Thailand are routed.

Last week I could not load any subdomain of the blogs at wordpress.com for the same kind of misconfiguration and nobody reported, that Thailand blocked wordpress.com.

YouTube was available all the time without the www at the URL-start (a subdomain) and via different IPs. It was a simple misconfiguration, no block, no censorship.

BANGKOK (AFP) - Thailand on Wednesday blocked the popular video-sharing website YouTube after it carried a clip seen as insulting the country's revered king, a government official said.

Vissanu Meeyoo, spokesman at Thailand's communications ministry, said they had asked YouTube to remove a video clip considered offensive to King Bhumibol Adulyadej, but no action had been taken.

"We have been blocking the website since this morning, after we found that it was very insulting to His Majesty the King," Vissanu told AFP.

"We have asked YouTube to remove the clip, but we have had no cooperation. If they remove the clip, we will consider lifting the ban," he added.

The move comes a week after Thailand jailed a Swiss citizen for 10 years for insulting the king by vandalising his portraits during a drunken spree.

The 44-second YouTube clip shows images of the king, crudely altered on a graphics program, which flash on the screen to the tune of the Thai national anthem.

One image shows the monarch next to a photograph of feet, which are considered the lowest part of the body in Buddhism. Such juxtaposition would be hugely offensive in Thailand, a mainly Buddhist country.

The profile of the YouTube user who posted the clip lists his location as the United States. YouTube is owned by Internet giant Google, and has a monthly audience of more than 70 million viewers.

Thailand's king, almost universally adored by Thais, is the world's longest-reigning monarch, and one of the few who is still protected by tough laws that prohibit any insult to the royal family.

Portraits of the monarch, who will be 80 this December, hang in every public building and shrines to him dot the sidewalks in major cities.

Oliver Jufer, 57, of Switzerland, pleaded guilty to five counts of lese majeste -- the crime of offending the dignity of a sovereign -- last Thursday for defacing several portraits of the king in the northern city of Chiang Mai.

The nation's censors routinely block websites that contain foreign news reports or online discussions about the monarchy. Foreign books and movies seen as critical of the king are also banned here.

Vissanu said the information ministry was considering taking action against other websites that carried links to the video clip.

I'm really disappointed that the government closed youtube. Now I live in Thailand, but I'm still interested about my home country. I could see the news, listen to music, youtube is not so bad, it doesn't have pornography. I understand that His Majesty the King was insulted, what is bad! But please don't block the hole site. Try to block just the video and find that user. To block the whole site is not a smart decision. Thailand's image is getting worse and worse and this way of dealing with the problems causes the impression that Thailand slips to a totalitarian regime.

just to be clear, the web was block becuase someone post a video that is very offensive to thai people. The video has the image of the king of thailand with a women'd feet picture on his head. The king is untouchable in thailand.if u point to someone with your feet is consider very rude, not to mention putting it over the picture of the king. This is not about politics, well not entirely. The right to speak and express is an important thing but i think one should be consider of others believes as well. It's a kind of respect, you know.

First, it's not true that YouTube blocked in Thailand because of Thai ex-piminister. Second, it's blocked because of lese majeste Thai's king. The reason that Thai's government has not blocked just only the link is because they had been asking YouTube to remove it for million times. But YouTube seemed to not care about this issue at all. Let' me explain the difference between culture.

First, the lese majesty law is NOT published by the king. This law was made about 200 years ago. Currently the reason that this law was NOT cancelled, is that Thai people DESIRES that law to be kept remaining. ==> The reason to support is that the King has done so much of good things to support Thailand to become better and better.
Once in his birthday in 1995, he said that the one who cannot be criticised is not human, and sometime he should be ciriticised so that he know what he does wrong.

THAI PEOPLE RESPECT THE KING, because HE IS THE IMPORTANT FIGURE IN THEIR LIFE and THEY COULD NOT STAND WHEN SOMEONE HURT WHO THEY LOVE.

Plus the government asked YouTube to remove the clip which they did not, so it is only fair that they block the site, c'mon...is it really that hard to remove a clip??? The King is respected and loved by all Thai people, not only Thai people actually, how would you feel if someone takes a picture of your dad, mom or gf/bf and alter it into something disgusting? The point that is unacceptable for Thai people is Youtube declined to remove an improper clip of the ridiculed images of our king, even be requested repeatedly from Thai ICT's minstry many times.

By the Thai law, if anyone criticize publicly to the king and royal family, that person will be send to the jail.

As a Thai, I'm also a Youtube fan. I love Youtube as a great edu-entertainment video-sharing site. But, Youtube, should consider and care more about sensitive-topic clips for people from other countries

You can ridicule our prime minister or whatever person on Youtube. 2 Things that are a taboo is our king and Buddhism.

Lese Majeste in Thailand is a joke, as in the case of the Swiss man who when under the influence of drink paint sprayed pictures of the king, and got ten years in prison for his trouble. O' also the reason to block the whole website is easy.
As most of you see, even the very first video clip was removed. There are still lots of new ones, the SAME CLIP but DIFFERENT USER. Also there are so many paths to access a clip.

Thai junta govt don't want Thai people to see it because the govt don't want to hurt other Thai people who still don't know about this.

Actually, there are lots of people who know about this, is currently cursing the one who made this clip. It's the different of culture, and I think it is very difficult to make foreigner understand this difference in culture.

I tried to go on You Tube to put my positive videos of Thailand up. I have absolutely no disrespect today, for Thailand's military government! I do love the king, but I don't need You Tube to know the truth about the present government, excluding the monarchy. Interesting, the present prime minister is able to obtain public land illegally and put his mansion on it. Worst thing of all, he is still lying about it! THAILAND MADE A HUGE MISTAKE KICKING OUT TAKSIN. Where is the Thailand's money now? I would check the current government's pockets for that. TAKSIN GAVE THAILAND TOO MUCH, and they tried slapping him the face. I hope Thailand wakes up and does something about the economy and especially the government before it's too late. With no money, censorship, and no personal decision, I see communism in the near future.

We Thailand have our own way to live, not worry whether we have little money. We are afraid of economy has gone too good. We don't want everything turned to be some kind of investment or sth. AND A LOT OF CITIZEN IS HAPPY WHEN THAKSIN WAS KICKED OUT. You might have to look back at some website that report about the military coup in Sept 2006, you will see Thai people want to take the photograph with the army. It is strange but people LIKE IT.

I don't defend that this govt is not corrupt. It is difficult for all the countries to get rid of corruption, right? Actually I don't like this govt much (they don't know how to do work), but they are still far better than Thaksin (who sell the sattelite to another country, and tried to avoid paying the $1b tax to the govt).

The law is now being published and was not yet cancelled. So the police should obey the instructions said in the law.

Hey, i'm an american living now in Beijing on China Telecom.
MY ISP allways blocks Skype, MSN and servers like Myspace and Google. I"ve tried lots of things, but the best one is www.strongvpn.com !
It gave me the American IP which i use now, no lagging, full anonymous! Think its my my best choice

When I encounter this problem, I use the website of ViewYouTube (http://www.viewyoutube.cn)
It's specially designed to watch YouTube video's online without hours of seaching/installing/configuring software. I can only recommend this.
The website is English but from China because it's used alot there.
