i'm quite interested in learning new languages, but the bottom line is languages take a lot of effort to really learn to any useful extent... i've seen a lot of shortcuts attempts, and most don't really get around the fact that you just have to put in hours and hours of time...

it's like get rich quick or get thin quick schemes... they just don't work.

Soph has a good point. The advantage of babble is it provides an opportunity to put in those necessary hours needed to learn a language.

Too bad babble does not have any Asian languages. That could be something for the future.

    Hello Kristen,

Thanks a lot for the quick response and in-depth review! Just wanted to get in touch to express my appreciation.

Certainly a lot of effort goes into Babbel.com, but the current version is only the first step. We are in the last stages of developing the new version, which I hope you'll take a look at once it's been released. We'll be sure to let you know when the new features are online.

For anyone who wants to start learning a new language with effective results and not too much effort, Babbel is already a great solution.

    Best regards from Berlin,
    Markus

Anyone actually tried this? Is there a review somewhere that we can read?
  • mkwi · 1 year ago
    Hello Zombia,

Almost 60.000 people tried Babbel.com already and most of them do seem to like it. There are some quotes on the website at:

    Nicole,
    Thorough review...

I think it would be nice if you added some commentary on the business models of start-ups included in the start-up review series... these are businesses after all.

Babbel is great! After this post I checked it out and think it has some really great tools/features. Currently I've been a student on wwwe.edufire.com and I think that maybe these two sites could compliment each other for me and my Spanish! Thanks for the resource

It is interesting to see where the company chooses to take its development further now that it has raised its first round of funding today. As a person deeply concerned with all the things related to learning languages, I do think the better approach would be to try to lose the "playful" image and build a truly useful tool for everyone, including language professionals that could also generate some revenue for the site.

If you are self-motivated enough to learn a language and are looking for a tool here's what you might find useful: http://wordoholic.com .
