I don't think this will be a death blow to revver. On the contrary it is a boon for all users who have been sharing videos. More places to share means more money earned.
  • Kyle Korleski · 2 years ago
Of course. I plan to upload my Karaoke videos to YouTube considering that I need some extra bones.

I think there is some potential for this to be good for Revver, but only if they have the revenue to actually compete for top talent. The minute you start paying for talent, you put yourself on a different level. They ought to be purchased by NBCU or someone similar, who could give them the backing and ad deals to be a "top talent", sharable community video site.

    ted,

Here's the thing: YouTube has the world's most successful online advertiser behind it. Granted, Google hasn't yet proved itself with video ads, but if anyone can dominate that space, they can. I don't see how Revver can compete with that.

I worry for Revver. It's a great tool for those wanting to hos videos on their own site and I wouldn't want to loose it. The money is bonus, but the maint hing for me is the syndication possibilities.

As a destinations ite Revver is quite lacking and that's propably been it's biggest hinderance in the race. I've come ot like LiveVideo's community features a lot, but it's lacking int he areas where Revver shines.

Only if there was a way to combine the best of both worlds.

Well revver still as the unique selling point of the API that allows 3rd party sites to use it to power inline video. I would say this is sufficient for the company to exist on its own.
  • Ryan · 2 years ago
You can only have 300 favorites now. And only the first 400 videos in search are shown now.

This is a huge step backward for YouTube...

What about the Youtube gamers? has there been a change to the youtube algorithm, if not, this could attract even more!
  • Guna the Startup Booster · 2 years ago
I think this is just going to add more pressure on other social networks to begin to share revenue with their userbase. I've made a post on my Startup Booster blog about this yesterday. It does not have to be Video but you are right, Revver and other have to watch their next move. Although many people just love the system, there are other 90% who loves the $$$.

    Guys -

It really obvious what Google is doing. By paying for "youtube" videos it will force people to signup for Google Checkout. Google will deposit the funds in the Checkout account, which can then be moved to your bank, etc.

If anything, this is exactly what Google needed to do to bolster their efforts against PayPal -- not to mention it keeps them @ the top of the video heep for quite a while.

I think this is an important business lesson for those other video sharing startups competing with YouTube. A feature (social networking, revenue sharing etc) is not a business model in itself. It gives you a small boost but it has always been about community. If you don’t take advantage of that small boost quickly enough, your competitor assimilates that feature and crushes you. Social networking, revenue sharing, tagging etc will all just become standard features. The winners will be determined by branding and how they market to their communities.

But sharing revenue with users isn’t the big news here. Sharing revenue with the original artists through audio fingerprinting is. Now that is something the big media hunchos would be interested in. No doubt they’ll complain about how it still isn’t enough. They will push back. But it’s a huge leap forward by YouTube.

Good luck monetizing that empire of piracy, spam and abuse, otherwise known as Youtube. Why are we suddenly conceding the internet to Gootube??

The BBC have mentioned that the ads might be in the form of “pre roll ads” i.e. shown before the video. If this is the case it would be a bad move for YouTube. I know it’s only “3 seconds before a video starts” but it’s still very annoying and I think it would have users ’switching off’

We're excited to hear that YouTube has admitted that paying creators is important. We've known that all along. As you all know, we've built our business on that ideal. Giving our community a stake in our success and respecting their contributions to the site has been a great starting point for creating a community around original video.

And many of our creators and sharers have done quite well using Revver. We don't struggle with copyright issues and our technology supports open syndication and revenue-sharing for every video on our system.

As Alastair points out, our API and open syndication model takes the business model a step beyond just sharing revenue with creators. Remember, we share revenue with sharers as well. Anyone can build a video site on top of our API. As more partners build upon our open source technology and the network grows, that means more revenue for everyone on the system.

I agree with Ajay that as the video space moves more in this direction, it's good for all creators. It's a big world out there and the demand for online video is growing. With our creator-friendly TOS and comittment to a democratic revenue-sharing model, Revver will continue to be a good home for independent artists' work.

I live in Los Angeles. Anyone from youtube looking at this should contact me. I have a patent on this that pre-dates the direction you're going in. I'm thinking it would be better to sell it to you and integrate the "big picture" into youtube instead of coming out with a separate service. My patent puts the nail in the coffin of any competitor of youtube. Seriously.
