Mashable - The Social Media Guide: 2008/06/09/social-network-spam/

This is put further into perspective in a report from wadja.com, which used 500 'social networkers' across Europe to find that 36% are frustrated by spam and advertising on social network sites, while only 11% are worried about the security of their personal information. I think the 89% not worried about security may require further education but the obvious perception is that interruption is more of a problem than privacy.

Funnily enough, the only social network I get any kind of spam on is Mashable's community site...

Spam has become one of the biggest unbearable bugs around the Internet.
I think Internet Service Provider (ISP) should come forward to resolve this in better manner. I am frustrated everyday deleting huge number of spam mails in my inbox. It as become a everyday routine for me. I hope one fine day some one will come forward to kill these bugs.
