No,desktop images do not need a social network. Very few things do, but this will not be widely recognized until 2009. Andrew the prescient curmudgeon.

Desktop Nexus is an awesome site that inspires owners of other desktop wallpaper websites. The social networking side of it makes it feel much more like a community, which is great for all niche markets.
