Very, very interesting article. I always wondered why MySpace had not opened up to widgets like other social sites. This definitely provides insight.

never heard of this site until today...at first thought it was another version of Techcrunch...good stuff posted on here...myspace is getting to spammy anyway...their on the way down..and hi5 is on the way up.

    Start a clothing lin,

No, Techcrunch is another version of this site. ;)

Wow... I just sat here for two minutes trying to figure out why Pete was saying "Start a clothing [line]" LOL

Anyway, this post prompted me to lookup imeem, and all I can say is WOW. I remember finding the service through Google while checking out the social network space (I had an idea similar to imeem, so I was doing some research). After seeing very few users, I thought "well, maybe my idea isn't so good"

Anyway, I'm really amazed at their growth... So congrats to them.

    Hey Pete,
re: "MySpace should charge widget developers based either on the number of embeds, or create an ad revenue sharing system for the bigger providers"

Im willing to bet that charging smaller widget providers will drastically reduce the number of MySpace widgets developers that can afford to play. You might have given them the silver bullet ;)

Rev share for widget providers seems like a better way to let the developers keep building cool stuff that keeps the community glued to MySpace.

    Sameer,

Right, but they don't have the infrastructure for that yet. Maybe they need to partner with someone that serves Flash ads (Mochi etc) to make that work.

Finally Pete, you are starting to write stuff about MySpace which makes sense. Hopefully MySpace follows your words of wisdom.

Photobucket got big for their image hosting not video hosting so i dont think that blocking their videos is going to hurt them that much. Most people use YouTube anyways.
  • Pete Cashmore · 2 years ago
    Audi,

well, you could argue that it will remove one of their biggest costs. ;)

Incidentally, they're 3rd in video behind MS and YT.

    shaun,

    Uhh..thanks, I guess. ;)

I disagree that myspace should charge widget providers (or anyone who creates a service embeddable to myspace). If a service like photobucket wants to take on a sorely missing feature (photo hosting at the expense of bandwidth costs), then kudos to them. Let the 3rd party developers (Imeem for ex) take on the copyright issues as well. But if Myspace wants to block these providers, for the sake of not wanting to miss out on the next YouTube, then they deserve to fail. Pete, honestly, I think you should hold off a little on the suggestion that payments should be made. Not only because it makes me uncomfortable as a under-funded social media startup, but because generally speaking I think it is the wrong direction for free-to-use social sites (and the web!) to go in. Just my two cents. Thanks for the constant updates-- you've created a great (and influential) resource here.

Slightly off topic but related: I wish Myspace would stop trying to crush the widget ecology and spend a little time putting out the massive spam wildfire that is devastating the site. Someone in engineering must know how to craft a regular expression, no? Yesterday some poor girl's phished account blasted me 60 copies of the same message through a faulty spambot. WTF?
