The DefCon haxxor speech halting reminds me of the [awesomely] ridiculous overreaction 2 the _AQHF_ [Aqua Teen Hunger Force] Boston "incident". Same level of pre-emptive paranoia resulting in censorship-done-usa-2008-style. Makes a cynical chick [such as myself] wonder if protecting the grand unwashed Mr Joe Public is really the true underlying aim *cue sinister conspiracy/thriller movie muzac here*...

Lots of people think that these kids didn't follow the standard disclosure guidelines (i.e., contacting MBTA in advance of the talk to work out a solution).

    However, they did (see:http://www.eff.org/deeplinks/2008/08/mit-students-response-mbta-statements)

It's stupid to think shutting up a few kids will make the problem go away (look here: http://www.tgdaily.com/content/view/38817/108/),
But perhaps there was something else the MBTA was reacting to....

According to Information Week, an early version of the announcement of the Defcon talk began "Want free subway rides for life?" And would discuss "...social engineering attacks we executed on employees..." And the release of "several open source tools to perform these attacks."
