I would like to start a podcast and one big deterrent has been the hosting. I would like to go in for free hosting though I know that there are some ownership issues. I'm ready to sacrifice that - for the time being.

Having done that I decided to look for some free services and the problem is that there are many who offer free service. I wanted recommendations on who the best free hosting provider for podcast is. If someone who has actually used the services comments that would be a bonus.

Pete continue the good work as it helps a lot of people like me.

Re: GCast – Free Podcast Hosting

Very interesting thanks for the info

Re: GCast – Free Podcast Hosting

Hi James,

Thanks for that. Yes - I really like the idea of Fruitcast, and it's good to hear you're putting in fraud detection. I don't know - I still get the sense than online advertisers have become accustomed to detailed stats, but I could be wrong. Anyway, did you see this recent interview with Jason Calacanis about podcasting business models?

http://www.newmediamusings....

Jason points out that audio is not as accessible to the ordinary user as text - text ads beat banner ads because anyone who could put half a sentence together could create a Google ad. What are your thoughts? How could you increase accessibility of audio for smaller advertisers?

Good luck with Fruitcast - keep me updated!

--Pete

Re: GCast – Free Podcast Hosting

James from Fruitcast here. I caught this in my RSS feed and was about to jump over and point out that we offer something similar -- since we actually handle most of the podcast bandwidth for podcasters who use us -- but you already mentioned us and saved me the trouble! :-)

We're doing quite a bit to prevent click-fraud when it comes to downloads. For one thing, we've already implemented functionality that prevents ads from being run when a podcast episode is download from the same IP address. They still get the podcast, but no ad (and hence no ad revenue). We're working diligently on implementing "fuzzier" fraud detection logic as well.

Regarding the "no reliable metrics for podcasts" issue, that's something we've naturally heard a lot about lately, but I think once advertisers understand the medium, they'll come to use podcasting for what it's best at.

I also sometimes like to point out that there are ALSO no reliable metrics for magazines, newspapers, billboards, radio spots, or the vast majority of other advertising media. We've all just gotten soft because of the instant gratification of pay-per-click. :-)
