Mashable - The Social Media Guide: 2008/08/12/twitter-pownce-following-limits/

  • grum · 1 year ago
Twitter limited my account, so I created another account. I don't see how this stops spammers.

Nonetheless, Twitter has limited a lot of accounts owned by people who have a lot less than 2000 friends.

How hard is it to have a "report this user" feature and limit accounts with a large amount of complaints against it?

In the meantime, Twitter just goes about their business and limits the accounts of all the "A-Listers", the same people that helped Twitter become popular in the first place.

Ugh. _Account limiting_ [or, in more buzzworthy terms, _Follow Throttling_] smacks of retro + not in a shiny "get-ur-grooove-on" retro way either. Twitter + Pownce seem determined to define user experiences by how *they* perceive social networking spam is manifesting + not through a user's POV [top-down ftl]. Fer feck's sake, couldn't they [insert lightbulb-above-head-*flash*-here] simply give users an *option* of Follow Throttling while keeping a Big-Bro-like eye on accounts extremely out of whack?

The limits are interesting however I think this has little effect on spammers and I think this is just as much an system architecture decision to reduce complexity/system stress if anything else.

Having a limit restricts the number of connections and near needless calls when users pull up their profile pages. And with twitter now owning summize, they provide a much cleaner solution for drinking out of the firehose.

My advice, enjoy the freedoms of less is more, track you replies and if there is something you really want to follow watch summize.

What about people who have that many followers but use it responsibly e.g. twitlive ? Sweriously, twitter has left the door open for a new competitor to come in and give us what we want.

Some scum bag named Brent Csutoras is talking about editing "one of my twitter accounts" and complaining he can't follow more than 2,000 people (actually, he talks about followers, "User can now only add up to 2,000 followers before being limited and receiving this error message.")

    His self-description?

"Internet Marketing Consultant who specializes in Social Media, Viral and Search Engine Marketing."

Dude needs to be drug out and beaten like a rag doll with all the other scammers, spammers, and shit heads.

Sam, I saw that too, and I tried to comment, but mister "social media" (aka Brent Csutoras) moderates his comments, so I wasn't able.

Apparently, he thinks joining the conversation means only if you have something that paints him in a good light. Total fucking moron.

@Bill, I like the term "slop" to describe these people and content. How do we institutionalize it?
There are some great domains available, and I know the owner of "slop dot com" (still wants too much for a small project to set up tho). Somewhere to expose the "social media syndrome" would be great (a valleywag contributor expressed interest as well, still attempting to contact drama2.0). Have to be top 5 in search results for their name to be effective I believe.

I'm on-board, show me the way. Delicious tag: SLOP

Nobody gives a rats ass about Pownce, aka Leah Culver's retardfest of brain-dead "followers". Who does this "news" really affect anyway? Is she such an attention whore that she has to draw attention (yet again) to number of people in her wagging little cult of "fans"? (Half of whom are probably already pretend anyway). She's utterly pathetic. At least Twitter has an iota of class.

Could this be the key to commercialising Twitter: free accounts with a limited number of followers/following, and then premium accounts with higher limits?

Why is _your_ interpretation of what is managable or not relavant in regards to what I should do?

What is next, limit in feedreaders to 5 blogs because "that is all i can follow so you should not do different"?

I am all for managing problems, making a platform stable and everything, but please do not try to put your limitations on other people.

You can see clearly how many people somebody is following and followed by, it is your decision who you want to follow or not, who you want to publish to or not. It is not your decision to determine how I use such a system.
  • Jon Kepler · 1 year ago
Burak brings up a very good point above. Also, the process of following people to get them to follow you isn't really limited by this feature; you just unfriend others after you're sure they've added you and semi-forgotten about you (a few days, most likely).

Dear Mr Rizzn + other delightful comment_reader folk,

Just wondering how this adds 2 the mix [+ potential Twitterverse exodus]?:

I'm sorry but microblogging (twitter) etc is just something I dont understand. Seems like the biggest waste of time on the net to date!
  • netwurker mez · 1 year ago
    Dearest Timbo bribemeister,

No need 2 apologise, sir. 'Twould b my distinct pleasure 2 offer u a quick explanation as 2 y Twitter [+ other microblogging services such as Identi.ca] actually do matter. + I'll use a basic example based on ur proffered linkbait [ie the website u've chosen 2 link directly ur name]. Imagine 4 a moment that this link that shoots straight 2 ur MySpace page isn't filled with blatant self-promotion with stylized comments on a customisable template, but instead contains legitimate "ins" [focal communication points] where ur listeners/acquaintances/[wannabe?]groupies can exchange insights/snippets/tidbits with each other. Imagine, if u will, the implicit joy of said ppl actually exchanging everyday life-stuff thru a funkay/fit/wicked space designed by smart myopic weevils [ie techheads] who cry tears of joy every time a user gets their immersion wings.

Starting to get the messy picture Timbo? The reason micro-blogging services matter is that they act 2 connect ppl who want 2 share their "bits" [in all their cruddy glory] + provoke engagement with content that doesn't simply act 2 promote/flog/spew info that any o' advertising blipvert can....

Btw ur muzac isn't half bad.

Actually, posting "I don't understand" comments on stories about Twitter is biggest waste of time on the net to date.
  • netwurker mez · 1 year ago
    *hi_5's Michael*.

Good call. I must say, tho, if ppl comment "I don't understand [insert ur choice of sparkling-soc-net] blah start-up" that's fine - just gives us a chance 2 burble explanations. Timbo seems itchingly negative about microblogging generally, which smacks of ignorance or self-promotion.

Tho, Timbo dearest, if u do write back with a astoundingly well-craft retort with relevant reasoning as *y* u assume micro-blogging is a crushingly huge time-waster + manage to work in the issue under discussion [follow-throtting] I'll be happy 2 eat my [obviously stylish] credibility shorts.

And its for this very reason I created http://www.friendmenow.com/.

Why? Because friends are important, even those you wouldn't want to meet in a gajillion years. Real friends are there when you need someone to talk to or have a drink with. Virtual friends are there when you need that One vote to get you to the front page or post your blog for you after you've been banned from a social media site.

Oh look, another social media spammer. Death to you and all your kind!

Social media spamming and shilling needs its own name. Maybe pork rinds (or some derivative) could be a good term. Rinding? You Rind? Slop?

I wanna create a slop snooper and a slop killer.

All these social media consultants need to be outed for shit-bags they are.
