Mashable - The Social Media Guide: 2006/08/26/motortopias-myspace-for-motors/

Slick interface, but nothing that isn't being done elsewhere. There are numerous car social networks (Boompa.com, CarDomain.com, TunerFriends.com, etc.). The lack of forums is a huge oversight, but even so, there are existing forums out there some with over 100,000 members and I don't know how these guys would compete with them. "It could be the perfect hangout for petrolheads" ignores the fact that petrolheads already have hangouts and unless they have some strategy for getting people to jump ship, this is a sinker. A slick interface and AJAX won't cut it.

    Skeptic,

Yeah, good points. I'm kinda 50/50 on this one - definitely think the lack of forums is a massive problem (should have been the 1st thing they added) and makes you wonder whether they understand this market.

Why is everything "MySpace for" something?

Can someone not have an original idea without borrowing from them?

    Andy,

No, it's just that I can't write an original title. :)

I totally want the gloss. Start calling them Small Spaces!

Pete-- why no mention of boompa???

I think these sites will eventually split off into niches for each model line. If you drive a Ford, you probably don't care about anything else.

    Joel,

Cos I forgot. I did review Boompa on Weblist, though.

[Why is everything “MySpace for” something?]

Thats easy. A phrase such as "My Space for cars" is a way to immediately convey that this is a social network (and what a social network is), all in four simple words. It has nothing to do with direct feature set copying, its just a plain fact that My Space is the common-denominator of social networks, and most every one has seen it and understands what it is.

FYI, Motortopia added their group feature complete with forums, events and chat. Groups caters directly to enthusiasts, existing car clubs and businesses.

Site seems to broad - Cars, boats and bikes? Smaller and Smaller niches will prevail. I mess around with Harley's and have been enjoying http://www.bikerworlds.com. Niche within the Motorcycle market.
