Powered By Danger is taking its initial community from hiptop.com, Danger's previous community site which was a phpBB forum gone wild with a monthly newsletter. It also had a mobile blogging service but I don't think it got much use.
I'm not baffled by it at all. It helps builds device and software loyalty while service provider loyalty seems to be generally built by service contracts.
