It's interesting to these these social networking figures from almost 2 years ago. I think I'll try to find an updated version of these numbers for a comparison. ;)

Wow. Now this explains why AOL would plunk down $850 for BEBO, a social network ranked 12th out of 21 and down -81%. Yea, it makes perfect sense.

    /sarcasm

It's not an accurate picture of what's hot and what's not. It's only accurate in showing what network has had the most & least growth from February 2007 to February 2008.

Let's look at Flixster... using Compete.com we see they lost 32% of their UVs in the last month.
    http://siteanalytics.compete.com/flixster.com/?...

Flixster's Facebook app is suffering a similar fate:
    http://adonomics.com/company/Flixster

It's lost near 50% of its traffic over the last 30 days.

    Ouch. NOT Hot.

Your Facebook analysis is also deeply flawed in the same way.

    http://siteanalytics.compete.com/facebook.com/?...

It's grown 102% Feb 07 to Feb 08, but that doesn't give an accurate picture of today. It's fallen 8% in the last month.

Lastly, these #s are US only from the looks of it, so it's hard to compare sites that have a larger INTL presence than US.

Hey Adam, add Sampa.com to the list of Social Networks that you are tracking. Although, not a social network per-se, you can think of Sampa as "Ning for Families", where you build your own personal private place on the web.

this is a partial view of what's really happening as only 20% of the world's internet population is in the US. techcrunch had a good post on the global view:

Its appears that facebook like many other social media sites are reaching saturation point with their users.

After the hype, fads and promotions have taken the users on a roller coaster of excitement, the real question remains.

Is this social networking App Worth the time? Especially considering we appear to have less time for ourselves than ever.

Where does Multiply fit into all of this? I would expect it to be ranked higher than Yahoo! 360.

Seems like a lot of money for a site that is rapidly losing the interest of its members. For me, the real gold standard is time on site. If the site is not sticky it is really not offering value and if it is not offering value it will lose market share and will be difficult to monetize. Linkedin is the perfect example: time on site increasing along with traffic.

Let's face it, a lot of the traffic on social networks is fickle by its very nature and a lot of social networks will never produce a viable business model.
