That was one funny article before the editor got his grubby hands on it.
  • Pete Cashmore · 2 years ago
I only removed the unfunny jokes. Which was all of them.

All hail the almighty dollar...er, I mean peso.

Well, not only does it help to be involved with a fast growing industry like telecom, it also helps when your country's officials are uber-corrupt.
Much like the situation in the US when families such as Carnegie, Morgan, Rockefeller, etc. were able to amass enormous amounts of capital from steel, oil, and banking.

It is important to note that these fast-rising individuals are running service companies, not product companies.

I'm wondering what, exactly, made American Movil's stock jump 27% last quarter. He may be the richest man in the world today, but with that kind of volatility there's no guarantee he'll even make the list by this time next year. As the article states, Ellison hit #1 during the .com bubble.

Gates, on the other hand, is pretty diversified. Last I heard he had less than half of his money in Microsoft.

FYI, Carlos Slim's fortune will continue to grow exponential due to the fact that he ownes a phone monopoly in Mexico, he gets richer by the second. Also, we has a LOT more companies all over Latin America and the US, all kind of companies, from metal to bread, IT, computers, construction, etc etc, you gringos have no idea of the kind of power this man has... get to know his name, because he'll be in that list for a while.

  • stuart · 2 years ago

  • RYK · 2 years ago
    telecom, software, internet...says it all
  • Michael D · 2 years ago
How are they calculating the net worth of these individuals, I doubt that they are openly providing this information? I once read the IRS needed a special computer just to figure Bill Gates tax return
  • Biggie Mac · 2 years ago

    What ever happened to proofreading?

"exactly their huge wallets are the exact same size"

    Spellcheck is not enough.... Lazy....
  • Jethro · 2 years ago
AGAIN! Does the person who wrote this article even speak english? If so, was he taught how to read and write????

Michael is currently struggling to retain this position as he too control of the company once again, replacing Kevin Rollins at the beginning of this year, and the situation is not too cheery at the moment, so you can expect Michael to drop a position on this list real soon.
  • Jethro · 2 years ago
Evidently even his bosses don't want to own up to Stan Shroeder's writing for "mashable.com" -- when you click on his name, the link at the top of the article, it says: "Not Found

Apologies, but we were unable to find what you were looking for. Perhaps the search box will help."

This is the poorest editorial / news website i've seen in some time. The only thing you can count on from these guys is that my posts will be removed. No reason to DIGG anything here--in fact my insertion of "DIGG" as a searchable term was too much of a gift...
  • Pete Cashmore · 2 years ago
Totally agree. Two typos in a single article is utterly unacceptable. I'm preparing the guillotine now. Should we torture him a bit first?
  • redw0rm · 2 years ago
Jethro, you misspelled Schroeder. Proofread your stuff, man.
  • rajab · 2 years ago

What do you thing he eat everyday?
  • Aibek · 2 years ago
Never thought Steve Jobs wouldn't make the list. Interesting...

You cant buy food, a drink, electronics, use a cellphone, watch tv, buy a magazine, have dinner at some fancy restaurant, have a beer, ANYTHING without giving money to this pig, I really hope he gets cancer in his colon.

Carlos Slim became the richest men in the world not because of his companies, but because he has been looting from mexico richies from nearly 20 years in the name of the Ex president, Carlos Salinas, we all here in mexico despise him, and thou, it's nearly impossible to not buy something that will at the end representing money for him. DISGUSTING
  • Daniel Oliveira · 2 years ago
I think you forgot to put my name in this list :)
  • Sam · 2 years ago
I'm sorry to tell you that this is a bullshit list .. if u guys want to know the top ten list of the richest people alive check Forbes.com ...
  • Pete Cashmore · 2 years ago
Actually, this is the Forbes list cut down to only the techies. So if this is bullshit, so is Forbes, which kinda defeats your argument.
  • redw0rm · 2 years ago
The title of the post should probably be "Forbes' 10 Richest People in Tech." Aside from a minor reference to Forbes' 2006 list toward the end of the Sawiris entry, it's kind of hard to tell that all the research this list is based on was done by Forbes. Perhaps the assumption is that Forbes is synonymous with the concept of wealth-tracking, in which case they should be flattered.
  • Varun · 2 years ago
    Hi guys,

this list is a bit faulty.

where r the others like Waren buffet, Laxmi Mittal, the prince of jaffar.
  • redw0rm · 2 years ago
Again, check the title - this is a list of the richest people in technology.
  • Ajay M · 2 years ago
