They kept to the US because it's easier for them to set up, obviously they don't really care to find talent (not saying that the US doesn't have talent), they just want attention by plastering 50k across it. They probably don't even have decent judges.

Re: Yahoo Talent Show is a Sign of Desperation

Oh, I should also have added that Yahoo! also owns Upcoming.org (nice "2.0-type" site, if not super popular) and their development APIs far out pace any of the other large Internet companies, including Google (in my opion). Especially the YUI stuff.

They also have Yahoo! Answers, which is a huge success. They made Google look silly in that area, and Amazon is now playing catch-up. And the Maps are on par with Google in most respects.

Re: Yahoo Talent Show is a Sign of Desperation

Yahoo hasn't been making all the wrong moves... don't forget they own Flickr and del.icio.us -- two of the poster children of Web 2.0. They also just bought a chunk of RightMedia, which I think is a step in the right direction toward fixing their advertising problems.

Next up: they should buy Digg and steer clear of Facebook--possibly opt for bebo instead.

But yeah, they have to fix the new Yahoo! Mail. I switched back to classic after about 20 seconds.

Re: Yahoo Talent Show is a Sign of Desperation

At #2 Peter, I definitely agree with the yahoo mail. It's just awful, and I'm suprised such an established company could allow such a slow moving product. They have been making the wrong moves as of late. They are having an identity crisis, after self-proclaiming themselves the kings of web 2.0.

In terms of the Yahoo Talent Show, how could you neglect a worldwide user base?

They need to look themselves in the mirror soon and figure out where they want to be. They have let Google outshine them on every cylinder, and they appear to be on a strong decline.

Re: Yahoo Talent Show is a Sign of Desperation

it's probably more perception than reality at this point. google can do no wrong, yahoo can do no right.

long-term, yahoo does need to figure something out. their new mail client sucks badly. it takes 30 seconds to load. i have been convinced, over the course of my career, that management is to blame - almost solely - for any flagging of a tech company - other factors being equal. if management is successful in strangling the natural aspirations of the engineers and marketers and sales folks, then any company will falter in time. right now, google is hitting on all cylinders - and regardless of all the haters (TechCrunch, etc.), Google's ongoing success and innovation is due in large part to its culture (risk-taking, work hard, play hard, etc.). Yahoo could turn their fortunes around in a matter of days - they just need to take the management jackboot off of their employees' necks.

Re: Yahoo Talent Show is a Sign of Desperation

You know pete, Yahoo! has an permanent issue. They really think they are the best and they just follow on WEB 2.0 without real understanding of the potential.
