Location based services have been around for a while, I first noticed it in 2001 with the release of the Ericsson T68 on AT&T in 2001-2002 . Everyone knew back then it would be a big thing. Why is everyone now only saying its the next biggest thing? It has been a big thing for years, just not aavialable to the masses. Until alot more intricate smart phones were introduced.

I am setting this up for my business this weekend across our system of mobile devices. I have to continually communicate with guys at several locations downtown and it would be great to be able to verify they are there if I need them at any given time. Still going to double check with gemalto to verify there aren't any notable vulnerabilities since it's for work.

I'm curious, how is this different/better than BrightKite or a number of other services doing this? Is it just because it's Google?

I'm from Croatia and Latitude works great, several friends from Zagreb have confirmed it too. The only problem is that it doesn't work on iPhone.

Why is it a big minus that the ipod and iphone aren't supported?

Apple make up a tiny percentage of the market. Google has covered 98% of smart phones out there by supporting Blackberry, Windows Mobile and the S60 platform.

Besides, who would want this on an ipod?

Map definitely has huge potential to trigger many new innovations. In our apartment search product, the map covers a large fraction of our screen.

iGoogle gadget isn't available in the Netherlands neither.. Latitude does work on my Nokia N73 :D, but not on my Sony Ericsson :(

Not sure how useful this really is especially since its opt-in. The folks I would care for to know my whereabouts probably already do.

For topical questions like "Lunch Anyone?", whats the chance that the subset of your friends you really want to eat out with would have fired the application and read it in time?
