I'm a beginner in blogging and started blogging seriously 2 months ago. I'm able to earn 50$ - 80$ per month and I use this as my pocket money :).

Hope soon i can triple this figure in another month time with Tech Thoughts

I agree that blogging is a fairly low paid job unless the blogger has a huge following and page rank.
I also started out in the believe that it is possible to earn a full time income with blogging. I still believe this, even though I'm earning a nice little amount every month of around $150 with blogging. But I do know, that it takes time to build up a good blog and then the money possibilities come in various forms.

Meanwhile I happily blog on because I love it.:-)

I want to get money for blogging and I live in China so my expenses are lower. I teach English for about $12/hour. But, it's impossible to have 40 hours of classes every week. College students in the day and working professionals in night classes but it's still a small income. I hope I can make a second income blogging.

@EJRaven - Yes I agree. My actual blog makes a little here and there off of some of the ads, but nothing major.

What I did was figure, I'm not that great of a writer, but wrote anyway. Why? Because going "pro" has taken me down some different avenues.

I actually blog less now, but make more. Interesting how the blogging, for me at least, has evolved into a very exciting and interesting job(s).

Now would I like to have a blog as popular as Pete's (don't be modest dude, you are in the Arrington league according to the article!), yeah, but I also know what he says when he says "get very little sleep".

To be a world class and in the Arrington, ahem, Cashmore league of blogger - you lose a lot. Maybe you gain monetarily, but you give up a lot. Sleep is one of the many things.

But nothing comes easy, so whatever you do - bust your a$$ and keep your eye on the ball.

I knew the big guys did well...but ICanHasCheezburger?!? I know he has a cult following but I never imagined that made much money. It's not exactly riches and the whole LOLCats phenomenon may fizzle one day, but still a fun way to pay the bills...

I would argue that "I make money blogging" is a geo-determine term, in which your geographical location would determine if you really make money or you simply make extra cash.

For example for someone in the area where I am at, making $2,000/month from blogging would be pocket change for the type of living expenses in this area as oppose as if I was living in Cuba, El Salvador or other countries, I would easily be the richest man of the city.

I fully agree with you, in addition I believe that most blogs that are successful are fully unintentional or purely built over a relative long period of time with a lot of consistency, in a niche market.

While a startup would be the next step for any successful blogger, it seems many of them aren't taking the next step and rather stay within the comfort zone of blogging.

Interesting and strange as it may seem, the risk of starting an internet company nowadays requires little investment, which successful blogger, I don't think, would have any problem dishing out.

I started blogging as a sideline or hobby, not as a business. It makes me a few dollars, enough to support the hosting bill, but not enough to pay for my time. Still, it's something I enjoy doing so I don't look at it as another job.

We seem to be getting all caught up in the few bloggers who make a business out of it and become stars, but we forget this all started as just hobby stuff. I wonder what's the ratio is of people who blog as their profession to people who blog as a hobby.

Seriously, my blog has basically launched me into something where I do make money. So in a sense, the blog makes me zilch, but I leveraged the blog into something else.

Very True! Its very hard to earn money via blogging and more harder is to tell your parents and grandparents (they do not actually know the concept of computers...) that you are trying to earn money without leaving your home even for a minute.

I have been blogging since January 1 2007 and still I am not earning enough. But you then the point gets stuck at craze. Passion!

I just love searching my feeds to hit upon a article which seems worth writing about. I am an computer engg. student so do not too much time but still I wont stop. coz i am lovin it! ;)

Blogging is very deceptive. Many think you can easily earn a living from blogging, but this is far from the case. I would wager that 99.99%+ of blog owners are unable to earn a respective living doing so. Having said that however, I would also wager that only a small percentage intend on doing so.
In addition, as Mike mentioned above, other opportunities can arise via blogging, including consulting gigs, speaking engagements, and lucrative job offers.
