Mashable - The Social Media Guide: 2007/10/09/jaiku-google/

  • Doug Mehus · 2 years ago
It's not terribly surprising, though honestly, I've only heard of Jaiku in passing. I had no idea what it did or that it was a Twitter-like service. Why is it not surprising? Well, Google likely still feels spurned by Evan's abrupt departure and the fact that several Blogger and Google employee alumni have left for Twitter.

    Cheers,
    Doug

Maybe. With Google's obvious larger mobile plans, they can probably do a lot to increase adoption of Jaiku, which really is a very similar product to Twitter. And, Google likely saved a few bucks in the process (not that it matters too much as they near a $200B market cap ...).

Maybe they'll starve development on it like they did with Dodgeball.
  • Pete · 2 years ago
Exactly what I first thought. Abandon Dodgeball, buy Jaiku (which is fairly similar, imho).

So who buys Twitter now? Yahoo? Certainly, the Twitter demographic overlaps a lot with the Flickr demographic and the del.icio.us crowd.

    Or maybe: Twitter IPO!

    [end bubble]

Why can't Google buy Twitter also? Kill/Merge their competitor. Yahoo! is definitely a candidate if the price was right..
  • Rajiv · 2 years ago
Any news on what was the deal size??
  • Adam Ostrow · 2 years ago
Nope, not being disclosed according to Jaiku's Q&A about the deal.
  • Pete · 2 years ago
Yeah, but we can play guess the price. ;)

How much funding did they have? Might wanna add that to the post (also a good indicator for potential price).
  • me · 2 years ago
Yeah, take a guess someone. :)
  • Adam Hirsch · 2 years ago
    $25 million ?
  • Steven · 2 years ago
How come Google didnt purchase the leader in the market, Twitter, or the new kid on the block, Pownce??
  • Adam Ostrow · 2 years ago
    Valleywag is rumoring $12M

People who are saying that Jaiku is the same as Twitter have never used it. Google have clearly bought it for the mobile proximity/presence technology
  • csven · 2 years ago
I'm thinking Jaiku might make a nice IM client for Google Earth. And perhaps with location-based information channeled through it, the beginnings of an Unype-style multi-user avatar system starts to take shape.

I suspect it's more to do with:

    a) Google Talk, or

    b) The upcoming Google mobile OS

    c) Possibly Google's aggregated "social streaming" plans (like Facebook feed)

Although there are plenty of synergies with various products.
  • xxdesmus · 2 years ago
No price yet? I am curious what it went for...
  • Jeffro2pt0 · 2 years ago
First off, congratulations Jyri Engeström and Petteri Koponen. Secondly, it looks like it’s getting to the point where you can’t use anything cool on the internet without Google somehow being involved. Thirdly, I can’t wait to see the implementation of Google Adsense.
  • phenom · 2 years ago
how much did they pay ??

Google didn't buy Twitter because Twitter has a bunch of the ex google / blogger folks on the team and they clearly didn't want to go back to google. I suspect that the price of Twitter was steeper than jaiku.
  • Hans · 2 years ago
Twitter doesn't do anything in the so-called “lifestreaming” space. However, Jaiku does...
  • Jeffro2pt0 · 2 years ago
By the way, it looks like every member of Jaiku has 10 invites to give away to those that want them.

simple, i bet EV didn`t accepted the deal. there is a lot of history on what and how the enigmatic Blogger buyout contract worked back in the day.. i bet EV must have asked too much control and asked for too much conditions and google didn`t accepted on them..

From my point of view Google has made another good move as Jaiku seems to have a much more clear interface and, maybe, better chances to win European hearts. I would really like to test it! I wrote an article about Jaiku design: http://www.designvsart.com/blog/?p=58
