Lets take Facebook for example. I figure their multi-billion dollar valuation is for their ability to reach to millions, and the information they have about all of those users.
If then one company, lets take OpenSocial (google) has all that information, they are the true big-wigs.
So, for convenience, its great, but for the sites using it, it won't be as valuable if their looking for an exit-strategy, right?
I'm not an economist here, so please let me know if I am way off, but thats how I see it going down.
You're correct to some extent. As much as their valuation is based solely on the users and user data they have accumulated they lose to some degree here (well the biggest loses, smaller sites can actually benefit).
However, just having the users (and their data) is only part of the equation. You need to keep the users around on your property - page views isn't the best way anymore to look at it - but they can be an indicator to some extent of interactivity. Facebook remains strong with their valuation as long as users spend a ridiculous amount of time on the property.
What will be interesting is whether or not this allows social based sites with more narrow feature sets to benefit greatly and draw away from time spent on Facebook and the like. Will more people use Twitter if they're friends can easily follow along with them (as one example)? I think this could be a huge boost to sites with single social focuses.
It makes you wonder...doesn't it?
