Hmmm...interesting but I think I like padora better -- mainly becuase it looks at the music I like and suggests new artists I may not know of. I'll still keep following this though...

I like the fact that on MOG, as opposed to Last.fm, there is the MySpace-like feature of forcing people to read the last post you wrote when they view your page. On Last.fm they have to click on the post title. Last.fm is more attractive aesthetically and everything, but that's what we should expect from the British.

Big Deal. MusicStrands launched more than 6 months ago, and they have a far better UI and features. Photo and videos and even Groups.

It's all in the race after last.FM -- which was the first out of the gate, but falls short in almost all repsects now.

I love these experiments. But at some point someone needs to come up with one of these schemes that's a real business. It's nice to see user growth and feature wars and watch what works and doesn't from a demand perspective while they're exhausting funds. And I don't think Google adverts are the answer. How would you soundly monetise lastfm or MOG? Or would you just hope Yahoo or News Corp comes knocking on the door and not worry.

Hehehe. Yeah, we established that the "feed the beast" phrase was wearing a bit thin, but I still think the idea makes sense strategically - look at YouTube's massive growth, for instance. Ditto PhotoBucket, ImageShack and a host of other services that hook into social networks (not just MySpace, although they're certainly the biggest).

Just to clarify MOG supports the following players:

* Windows Media Player
* ITunes
* Winamp
* Real Player
* Real Jukebox
* Quicktime Media Player
* Yahoo Music Engine
* MusicMatch Jukebox
* QCD Player
* Napster

As well as the iPod.

Even though this is a relatively new market... i still think Last.fm has a hefty lead here... They offer everything MOG has available with plugins for more applications than iTunes... for user who like using WMP or Winamp. Not to mention Last.fm is build on the Audioscrobbler database that stems years of data. I think MOG is going to have to work hard to get some ground here.

I'm really sure why I would use this over last.fm. Last.fm offers a plugin that works in more media players (I use WinAmp, rather than iTunes, for example), a few widgets of my recently played songs that I can plug into my blog, etc., and an RSS feed of the same list of songs, plus it has most of the same features: blog, forum, messages, etc.

The kicker? No open design so won't even be as ugly as MySpace.

It also has that first mover advantage.

Actually, I think you're right - I saw that too, but the site gave up on me before I could look into it (seems to have been hit by heavy traffic from BoingBoing.net). If that's the case, I'm sold!

In exploring the website, I found this under How Mog Works:
"And you can even add MOG to your Blog or MySpace page."

I was going to register & try this out, but the registration form appears to be having some issues at the moment.
