Mashable - The Social Media Guide: 2009/01/20/twitter-help/

There is also the time Twitter has helped to: land one a gig, to find help (as in hiring someone for a gig), get blog post ideas, catch up on the news, find a local service person, and so on.

In many ways, it is much more useful than Google. Yes i said it.

What about using Twitter as a social justice tool to provide eye-witness accounts of police or government brutality? I'm not aware of any real world examples but can imagine a scenario where Twitter could serve in such a capacity...

Here is a great example of how the Twitter/Buzznet community rose up to locate the community managers when they arrested during Anti-Prop 8 portests in Los Angeles. If it wasn't for Twitter who knows what would have happened.

I'm about tweet and email this - living in Omaha, hasn't totally caught on here (about 20% of my friends use).

    Thanks for quality list.

Great article. I love Twitter for providing that sense of connection to what is going on around you. Clive Thompson (@pomeranian99) said it best when he referred to it as a sixth sense.

    Can we add #10? http://twestival.com/

After a year of use, I still haven't found any motivating enthusiasm for it. Twitter seems more like a overrated, crowded AOL chat room. Maybe I'm not kissing enough Twitter hiny ...

The problem is that normal people don't use Twitter. A tiny percentage of Internet users do, and they are all the same, obsessed tech insiders. No one I actually KNOW outside of tech circles uses it, and I am not interested in following the minutiae of people's lives if they are not close to me.

Why would I use Twitter when all my friends are on Facebook?

The Twitter obsession and the lack of awareness about how small and insular the user base is is truly bizarre to me.

How about killing a few hours when you have nothing better to do with your life? ;-)

I found this article through a Tweet ironically. Great post and very true. I wish more people were on Twitter though. I do think it will become more mainstream shortly.

    Thanks!

Some good advice in there but a couple weird ones (stalking?). All in fun, I guess.

Twitter is great when you can't attend speeches, workshops, conferences. You can always find someone who is going and tweeting about it. I have received a few golden nuggets this way. It's a beautiful thing.

Great post! And if you use Loopt - you can link your Loopt updates to Twitter and provide your friends with a map to your location to better facilitate those real-world, real-time meet ups - or unfortunate car break-downs! http://www.looptblog.com/

Yes I dugg it because 1.I like lists, 2.You make some valid points, and 3.I wouldn't have known about this list if you hadn't tweeted it. Case and point, haha.

can't you just actually call someone when you are out of gas? or ask your friends in person what movies they've been enjoying? or go to the movies with your friends. it seems to me twitter is yet another device to add to the socially retarded landscape. wanna know what the weather is like? go to outside. wanna see how your friends are? give them a call.

I love it. That is so true about being a stalker! I kind of thought that when I first learned of Twitter. I am wondering where I would be with out it though that or Facebook.
  • Laura · 10 months ago
I still don't get it! What is all the fuss it seems like another facebook to me.
  • rampantheart · 10 months ago
Tweople rock! There are personally many inspirations. Most people use Twitter only to promote their blogs, yes, but people have an option when it comes to following others.

Funny! I have yet to meet any of my followers in real life that I hadn't known before twitter, but I'm sure it's just around the corner, especially with twitter growing so fast.

Don't forget that Twitter can be used for good! Twitter has created flash mobs of people wanting to help out, like the case in Vancouver: http://is.gd/d2aD

The tweet between me and @willia4, at the bottom, is particularly appropriate since it was through Twitter that he and I met, started dating, and moved in together. New adventures through Twitter, indeed.
