You have expressed in the comments what I was about to suggest: that in no way a few weeks or months of traffic means squat about the success or failure of a company, especially when it tries to be game changing like Edgeio.
I am obviously conflicted in the case of that company since it is one of my investments, but that comment applies to all startups: it is unbelievably difficult to build a successful company and teams will have to go through many turnabouts, radical changes and retargetting before finding the right product/market/positionning. That's just the way it is.

BTW: I was trying to avoid the obvious choices, but obviously YouTube and Facebook will see acquisitions soon. Other obvious choices for profitability/acquisition:

I agree. The thing is, we see things very close up - in the bigger picture, a few months of traffic stagnation doesn't mean much. But, I do think that Squidoo is chronically misaligned right now. Edgeio is well aligned for the future, it's just that people don't "get it" yet.

Actually, I find it easier to predict success than failure.

Successes (in the sense that they'll either make money or get acquired)...

Slide, Ether, Swicki (although I think they've already been in talks with MS, so maybe that's cheating), Rojo, Feedburner (obviously!), Netvibes, Last.fm (well, duh!), Tagworld (so long as they get out while they can).

In the immediate term, the biggest successes will be Last.fm and Feedburner.

Pete, how about a list of the handful of web 2 companies that you think can survive and even go it alone without acquisiton? Its easy to pick a bunch that won't make it ;-)

Ah...but with Edgeio integrating Microformats....and with a little patience, I think they can actually change the way we post stuff on the net....okay...so maybe they won't make a gazillion dollars, but they will certainly change the landscape and make back their investment in the meantime.

Squidoo = walled garden

Edgeio = not so much

I'd give Edgeio at least a year before we judge it by it's traffic. It needs to spread outwards a bit more. ;)
