Dropbox has a free plan with 2 GB free space + 250 MB (if you sign up via my link). The free plan doesn't have time, file size and bandwith limits.

Also consider checking out Cucku Backup (http://www.cucku.com). It's a bit different - a peer-to-peer approach where you backup to a friend or family member instead of a datacenter. This is faster (you can seed the backup on an external hard drive and then just send new and changed files). It's also cheaper and greener because there's no datacenter to run. Cucku is free for unlimited storage to a single partner and cheap for multiple partners. I work for Cucku so I'm definitely biased but please check us out and let me know what you think.

Hey did you know Tata is also in the backup league watch out www.in2biz.in UNLIMITED online backup for Rs. 2000 per year. That comes to ~40$ cheaper than anything.

Best part is it is AUTOMATIC, SECURED and I can recover my files from anywhere. All i need to do is connect to internet.

I am using it. I would suggest you to give a try.

I used some of the above - on the backup side I could not find ONE friendly service (try Mozy or Carbonite when you have 500k+ files and over 700GB of data). Ended up buying space from rsync.net and running my own backups. Advised if you are good with linux.
On file hosting, forget rapidshare or the heavy ad-sponsored services. They have too many limitations. I use quicksharing.com (fast) and ravishare.com (multi-upload without registration and integration with Twitter). Will they be reliable? Who care, they are free...

The biggest solution out there is missed off. Connected from Iron Mountain has 3+ million paying users - so forget all those that give it away and then count them as real customers. Users of Connected include: HP, Logica, Google, Amazon, PwC, Hilton, Boeing...

There's a huge difference between simple areas to store data and business grade online backup. The former is a 'disk in the sky' - which has some value. The latter needs to account for multiple versions, long-term archiving, open file/database backup e.g. Exchange or SQL, encryption, bulk restore, etc.

Many of the free services are also based out of the USA. Nothing wrong with that as such, but European business users needs to take care of EU data protection regulations - that are only partially covered by the Safe Habor Protocols. They also need to consider how they will get bulk data back in a Disaster Recovery situation. And this brings me onto support...

Backup Direct (www.backupdirect.net) supports 2000 businesses in the UK with enterprise-class online backup – including using the Connected technology. What our customers want is secure storage of course. But more importantly, they want support. If we split out the storage element, then we could drop the price per GB to next to nothing. But somehow the experts in the office that know how to recover Exchange or Quickbooks, etc - need to be paid for.

Cheap backup is like cheap bin liners (garbage liners) - you will only regret using them when the contents of last night's dinner party and the malodorous mess are scattered over the floor and you are on your knees trying to clean up with your wife screaming ‘I told you so…’
