You can make friends or block people on it. 4.view shows in other languages and for those whom can't understand another language there's subtitles. I mean There's a lot of things on it. Best part Now Youtube is braodcasting live events it makes us feel apart of somthing huge I dunno about You but it makes me feel very good. And Youtube can be very informal on visual things. Your forgetting if it weren't for people putting things on Youtube it would be just another website. As for charging fee's thats usually how websites lose people. Isn't youtube about expressing yourself?

Re: YouTube Live: Why?

@John Welch I don't know about how many were watching last night. But the view count for the clips of just a few of the acts has already reached over a million views, and will only keep growing.

Re: YouTube Live: Why?

Am I missing something but aren't the "views" figures - around 12,000 for the most viewed at this moment - somewhat low for all the publicity and for YouTube itself?

Re: YouTube Live: Why?

Live ? The big advantage of the web is that you can see what you want when you want. Live sounds so... Jurassic. Maybe it has some interest for sports events. People like to know the results of their soccer club in real time.

Re: YouTube Live: Why?

It was a way to say:
"We can too. Now, if you want to broadcast live event on YouTube you can. Now we know how to build the brand before the event, how to catch the public and look, have you seen what remains AFTER the event? Have you seen our new and cool interface? Come on, get here and broadcast your TV shows get out of Hulu, they will just end up as Yahoo!"

Note that the very battle ground for YouTube against Hulu is outside US.
What is great for YouTube is that you can see their videos everywhere while the publicity is linked to your IP and so your country, or the country where you are at that moment, and so the market you can actually being interested in.

In Europe internet and computers are not diffused as much as in the US, but the most of the people that have a PC and a broadband connection are people who also speak English and usually they are younger than the average people and much more motivated in watching foreign languages, English above all. So we are talking of a market of 100 - 200 millions people that can be involved if YouTube will become the most well known on-demand movie broadcaster in Europe... a strong base for shadowing both Hulu and Murdoch.

Google is media content distributor, if they will lose the train for broadcasting TV on demand via web (note that I am not talking about web TV but about TV via web), they will hamper deeply their market position.

Re: YouTube Live: Why?

Well, I personally thought of it as something along the lines of foreshadowing the possibility that live streaming might come to YouTube (perhaps for paying users though?). And perhaps it's more openly challenging Hulu and the others?

Re: YouTube Live: Why?

It has to be monitarily motivated, where from, I'm not sure. It's being launched right on the site under the channel name, "Live". They say it's to get the community together. They did give us (content partners and longtime community members) first dibbs on tickets. I had mine but lo and behold, those tickets don't come with airfare. Who would've thought?

P.S. Not all of us live in moms basement ;)
