Sean, if you're going to do a list of great mobile travel applications check out Travel Channel GO. Built on the Earthcomber platform, but packed with Travel Channel related content (audio from Travel Channel show talent) and recommendations.

    http://go.travelchannel.com/travel/

Disclaimer: I'm doing some work with Travel Channel GO on this launch, but it's cool enough that I know Mashable followers like myself will love it.

I just used it with my iPhone to book my last business trip (hotel), schedule a meeting in D.C. a great restaurant and find a great late night bar in Georgetown.

They just took it out of Private Beta today.

Hostels are the main form of "cheap accommodation" available. I wouldn't categorize them as "other" :)

In addition to cheap dorm beds, many hostels offer private rooms at cheaper rates than hotels.

Hostelworld.com is the largest hostel booking engine, with Hostelbookers.com and Hostelsclub.com coming in 2nd and 3rd. A new meta search engine called tfthostels.com searches all three sites and compares prices.

I believe that hihostels.com also lists all of hiusa.org's hostels.

Thanks - will come in handy when I'm going to Vegas next Wednesday.

Hotel promotions are all over the place - always ask. In addition, don't forget to ask for the AAA discount, or for the corporate discount if you have a corporate job like GE/IBM.

I also created a webpage for things other than hotel deals. Link is in my name if interested - thanks guys.

    Hey,
great article - a very useful list of the top hotel accommodation websites out there. Out of the list, a number of really cool ones jump out - websites that offer something other than just being your "run of the mill" typical hotel sites. I love TVTrip, which shows video clips of hotel rooms, but www.ConcertHotels.com is also superb, and very useful for fans of live music, like myself. I used it to book a hotel near Twickenham Stadium for the recent Bon Jovi gig, and I have absolutely no complaints - site is easy to use, pretty quick, and it list lots of other useful stuff such as tickets and nearby restaurants - definitely a site to Bookmark.

Nice list! I’m an ambassador for Hampton Inns, I had some info that it seems like you'd be interested in, I thought I’d let you know about it.

Hampton Inn is offering 10% off the best available rate until September 1st. We’re also giving away bikes, vacations and a lot of other stuff for the Olympic Games!

    Check it out here: http://hamptoninn.hilton.com/en/hp/promotions/h...

Check out this video also and let me know what you think! Hope I didn’t bother or cross any boundaries by contacting you.

The way of the online travel industry is forcing many of these sites to have rate parity, so you will often find the same rates across all these sites. So, you have to do the next level of research and look for site exclusive coupons or discounts. RezHub.com is just launching this December, currently in beta, but they offer coupons for hotels. This is will be the only way to achieve savings over other sites in the future.

I think Priceline is the best for hotels; I found a couple of sites that I frequent for winning Priceline bids, so I have an idea of precisely how much to bid: better bidding and www.bidlesstravel.com

The latter has a slick database that you can query, but not many members (reads: not many bids, either), so I still use better bidding for now. ;)

    God bless Priceline! :)

If you are looking for a place for a couple of nights you could find a couch on couchsurfing.com. If you would like to spend a longer time in one place go to http://hostandcare.com which is a community that connects students and travelers looking for free accommodations with families and seniors looking for care. You get free room and board in exchange for few hours a week of helping out. You could do tutoring, child care, senior care, home care, etc.

When choosing a holiday it's always good to look at owners renting out. This option usually gives you much more comfort than staying in a hotel room and certainly offers a better insight into the area. For Bodrum Turkey look at www.bodrumholidaylets.talktalk.net

I find that it depends on why you're travelling. I've gone on great holidays with friends where we've stayed in hostels, but I would still consider an average hotel in a country like Bulgaria to be cheap. If I were flying out to Glasgow on business I'd want great accommodation so I'd probably consider a large hotel chain to be cheap.

It's surprising that you've missed out on serviced apartments, as for corporate users it is definitely far better to be stuck in your own apartment instead of being cramped in a hotel room for a week struggling to get any work done. Also, many services within hotels are terrible; at least a serviced apartment will provide any facilities you need for your stay.

Out of all the serviced apartments companies I've dealt with over the year I'd definitely recommend SACO Apartments (http://www.sacoapartments.co.uk).

Hi we set up a site that many may find interesting. It's like a bit of a hub where hotels can put their websites and one can book directly on their website. This makes for a much cheaper price and often better service because hotel's don't need to pay commissions to third companies.

It's mainly on Paris now and yes it is still in beta but try it out, I think you will like it.
