great overview. As you mention, it is compelling enough to consider over an iPhone given that it includes a pull-out keyboard. I'm looking forward to the APps that are built on the platform and the way in which OpenSocial plays into this.

Amazon MP3 is the immediate high point for me. Wi-Fi-only downloads are pretty sensible for the moment since few markets for T-Mobile get 3G. And it definitely isn't so pretty. Price point has an immediate advantage over the iPhone, but the data plan is more expensive over the long run. The iPhone 3G is $30 unlimited, I believe. (My 2G access is $20.)

I am looking forward to use it myself. Still i am not convinced of the G1. A lot of nice features and possibilities but where is the killer "feature"?

I would say there probably isn't one yet, but, if you're a heavy user of Google's Web Applications, the phone might make a lot of sense. The "must have" phone is probably a few devices out, once developers have had their turn to iterate on the OS and build apps.

The interface looks pretty decent, but it's not earth-shattering. In fact, it seems somewhat watered down from what an iPhone can do. It is nice, though, that it has an actual QWERTY keyboard; I personally hate text entry on iPhones and much prefer real keys. In the end, I don't really see how this is going to make an impact. I also don't see how it is superior to any number of iPhone-wannabes out there like LG Prada, Samsung Armani, LG View, etc. Just because Google is a large company with many customers does not assure success. Look at the raging (not) success of Microsoft's Zune for example. Limited applications, bulky and ugly device, watered-down user experience...yawn.

Fatastic not only will Google be able to track and store my search information it will be able to store all of my numbers, and know who I called, when and for how long. Even who called me! I wont have to be a private citizen again! I'll be an Android!

while i agree tha it most probably may -not- be the Pontious Pilate to the Jesus Phone, I do think it's an entirely different class of it's own, and will garner a good chunk of the population that is not immediately taken by the shiney lure of th iphone. it's a solid platform, i love how Google went for an operating system instead of hardware. they will quietly dominate, since Android isn't going to be just for phones - but watch out, that LG refrigerator that has the electronic panel and is hooked up to the internets so it can email you when you are out of soymilk, it'll probbably be running Android. This all comes after Google's chess moves at the FTC open air waves auction a few months ago. They didn't buy up any airspace, but definitely made a presence for Verizon and other companies to buy more so that they can glide on into that open-source bandwith too.

this build is bare bones, but that leaves the doors wide open for all the 3rd party app developers.

the killer feature? it has Cut n Paste. boosh.

and i think it's a mad cute phone. i dig on the boxy. like volvos.

Android still has a way to go in terms of market share. For now I think I'll build an iPhone app and simply port it over to Android when the time is right. Google shouldn't be underestimated though because when you compare OpenSocial to Facebook's fbOpen, Google is the clear leader. fbOpen still won't install on most operating systems, yet OpenSocial is already ported completely to PHP and Java with many more languages coming.

Most people are looking for something new. And this new G1 phone by Google may just be the answer. If all of the advertised features of the New G1 Phone are all working and the feedback for the phone from usage of this Breakthrhough phone are positive. Their going to sell quite a few. Watch Out I'pod. The Apple Phone has A little competition to deal with.
