Wow, the Jack-booted Thugs don't like it when the tables are turned, do they? Shades of the old "Government Information Awareness" program that was started - and quickly dropped - by MIT. Let's hope this lasts longer and has more of an impact.

We The People should be watching the government, and not the other way around. They are accountable to us, not us to them.

You have to have a public database so that Lawyers, Prosecutors, Defendants or Plaintiffs can check up on other incidents or complaints an officer was involved in - regardless of what part of the nation they are in.

These types of services are a reaction to the BLUE WALL OF SILENCE

They would get heated over something like this. Police officers catch a lot of flak these days and a lot of them have become morally corrupt (among other things).

Still, it's interesting to note how there are a million sites to follow just about every person IN the US and not a damn one that actively follows our government and it's officials like this site would.

I think this is a great idea. Law enforcemment is a service and like any other service oriented industry the public should be able to review it. The problem is that the police don't see it themselves as public servants, they see themselves as the law of the land. The enforcers and how dare the public that they are paid to serve an protect comment on what they do? They - like other service industry - should take the feedback and use it to improve what they do. Looking in the mirror is hard but we need a cultural change in law enforcement and that is very hard to do. I think this site can certainly help though.

This is just wrong. Lets face it, everyone that gets arrested thinks they have been wronged! Everyone then will go and put in how it was horrible, and forget to put in the part about carring a concealed weapon and crack. Basically, the only thing you will see on this site is complaints about officers doing thier job and arresting people. How many times do you complain about bad service at a restaurant... how many times do you tell the manager about good service (never).
  • Bill · 1 year ago
True we hold Government employees to a higher standard but we do compliment the servers at restaurants by tipping our servers, to complain is a service to the business unless the person is having a bad day and just wants to take it out on the server. I applaud Police who do their job and take bad and dangerous people off the streets, I stand by those who also are found wrong for a bad shooting not because they are cruel people but because they place their lives in jeopardy everyday and seeing a shadow in an ally-way with something in it's hand and they take the shot. We live in a dangerous nation where anyone can have a gun and where most will use it against another human being whether out of malice or fear. The police deserve to have our respect and like tipping a server at a restaurant we show our respect by obeying the laws, if not then suffer the consequences.

Sounds like someone is a little afraid of what might happen when cops are held accountable.
  • SearchRank · 1 year ago
This just goes to show you that eventually "all of us" will have to worry about what people are saying online about us. More and more, the Internet is becoming a tool that is holding people accountable to behave and perform well.

The only problem however is that it is subject to abuse (lies and propaganda).
  • Brook Motel · 1 year ago
    Besides,
If your a honest LEO who is not abusing
your authority and has done nothing
wrong, ...why would you be worried?
    Hmmm?

Say hello to officer Justin Volpe for me.
  • Axsar · 1 year ago
I agree this is a great site - it improves accountability. Maybe the next step for them is to try to connect to public databases of court ruling etc. so that Lawyers, Prosecutors, Defendants or Plaintiffs can find out case relevant info ie about the officer.
  • Jerry · 1 year ago
The police are public servants as are all those who work in government...they work for, and are paid by,...us,.."WE The People"..with our tax dollars. As our employees, the police should be held accountable for the quality of their work the same way we are. As their employers, we should be able to make these determinations as publicly as we wish to. If the police don't like it, that's too bad. Remember, they work for US and we sign their paychecks. As our employees, they are not allowed to determine the methodology of their job performance evaluation, or the vehicle that is used to transcribe and/or disseminate the information thereof. This should not be an issue of debate because there is nothing to debate.

As a police officer, I don't mind if there is a site that allows people to rate my performance. I will be the first to admit, there are "dirty cops" out there. But..... lets be honest here. Most of the comments that will be posted are going to be negative. How many people are happy when they have to sign that ticket or are arrested for something. Rarely have I ever seen someone arrested that was happy about it. Most of the people I deal with (as a DUI enforcement officer) are drunk and don't clearly remember anything from the stop. I have had complaints placed against me for my "treatment" of people I have arrested. And they truely they were mistreated right up until they see the video of the contact and see the real story. Sites such as this will not "keep cops in line". If you do have an valid and actual complaint about an officer, don't post it here, contact that officer's agency. Despite what people say, it does make a difference. An officer with several complaints about their attitude or conduct will be dealt with. I have known officers that have been fired (and rightfuly so) for their actions on the job. And this "blue wall of silence" that people like to believe exists, is nothing more then an antiquated idea. It may still exist in a small portion of places but to use it as an excuse for overall police conduct is asinine.

Do we not have the right to know if the people which are here to protect us are themselves violating our rights. I am not saying that all cops have abused their power in one way or another but thats why this will be a tool for us to see for ourselves
  • Chris · 1 year ago
The site is online again but not sure who is hosting it now.

I agree with Chris, it will be just one sided and there is no way for the police officers to defend their actions. File a police complaint at the department. There will be too many anonymous comments how can we trust their ratings.
  • Oliver · 1 year ago
Finally, something one-sided in favor of the people being oppressed by some very unethical law enforcement agents. It must be nice for them to feel the pressure of accusation (since due process is gone in the USA)that normal people feel. If ONLY they were actually here to protect and serve. Its amazing. In germany, you can actually talk to a police officer. and if you have questions or something during a contact with them (like a traffic ticket) they answer them politely, not tazer you..
  • bmaryjk@aol.com · 1 year ago
I've lived in Germany for years....they don't have to ask you for blood if they stop you....they can lawfully strap you down and take it:-)

And, cuffs weren't meant to be comfortable...so how many positive comments do you really think they will get.

    Go GoDaddy for having sense!

RE: CHRIS.....good posting....and just a note for everyone else,,,,The police have to put up with every kind of nutjob, whacko, perverted, murdering pyscho that society has to offer on a daily basis and may be killed in the process....if we want to grade cops, it is only fair to add that to the equation and cut 'em some slack.
  • Victom · 1 year ago
Sounds like your describing law enforcment though ? what happens when you kill one of them in the process and I am a nonviolent person that is really afraid of the police so keep that in mind Jerry.
  • Bill · 1 year ago
Funny how a lot of people here comment that our tax dollars pay for police salaries and so there for they work for us, I am afraid that this perspective is not true. Yes we pay taxes but that money is not ours to determine where it goes it is the governments and therefore they are paid by the government to enforce government laws. We the people have the right and the responsibility to watch government and those they have hired to perform their jobs with in the boundaries of the law. Sadly though they have different rule that they can abide by that permit them to cross over the boundaries, for example (minor issue) it is law to use a blinker when turning, law enforcement doesn't have to follow this law and you can not make a citizens arrest regarding this issue due to their cars are not automobiles but rather declared emergency vehicles and therefore are not governed by the same set of laws as us commoners, this includes speeding among other things. Sorry, but the concept that they work for use is a false assumption. tthatthwork""work"
